I just saw your other comment! I have not been to Monterrey, but my daughter has. We went to Vera Cruz for the New Year last year and had a wonderful time. I have been trying to brush up on my Spanish, but it is not so good. Luckily, both my girls are much better at it than I am! :)

Thanks for the info on The Savages. Where did you live in Mexico? My daughter's boyfriend is from Monterrey. I think that is quite a big city, but surrounded by mountains. Have a super day!
