Hi, I just read your review on "World Without End" and I felt the same way about "Pillars of the Earth". I couldn't express it in any other way but to call it a show like "Dynasty" or "Knots Landing", which are night-time soaps. It was as if he was writing for a possible screen-play sometimes. I thought I was the only one, that I was being too hard on the historical fiction genre thing. I enjoyed other elements of the book and he made me care about the people struggling for their very lives. It was worth reading. MB
I just noticed that my comment posted to your member page, not your review of Out Stealing Horses. So just to clarify, that's the book about which I was commenting. : )

I finished this book today. I was struggling with having such a different reaction to it compared with the praise heaped on by the other reviewers. I think your review perfectly sums up my reaction: I appreciate Peterson's skill, imagery and perception, but I never connected emotionally with the story. I kept trying to pour back over the lines to see if there was some revelation that I missed.
