I'd like to thank you all for your comments.
I have now officially submitted my thesis
(it has yet to be graded so fingers crossed!)
and I posted it on a blogspot so you could all
read what I came up with. http://seejaneread2007.blogspot.com
It's written for academic purposes so it can be
pretty dry (nóthing like chick-lit :)), but I hope
you might find something of interest to you!
Thanks again!

I like chicklit because it is an almost forbidden pleasure to be all "girlie". Someone said the other day that anything that is chicklit should have the word "Prada" in it. I loved the Bridget Jones Diary, Sophie Khinsella, etc. I compare it almost to having a secret ice cream. The reason I think sometimes I feel like I have to "sneak" it in. I want to read so many other things, also historical and literature wise, and compared to that, chicklit is so full of emotion and irrationalism....
Anyhoo, hope this diatribe helps.
Warmest cheers,
Gabi.

I hope it's not too late to help out with your request. I've not been on librarything in quite sometime.
There are a few reasons why I enjoy reading chick-lit:
1. I can easily picture myself in the position of many of these woman that I read about. So, it's fun when it's a fun love story.
2. If it is a feel good love story, it gives me hope for my own love life. Although, sometimes I'm not quite sure this is a good thing because it gives me ideas of a fairy tale coming true.
3. I can gab with my sisters and friends about what they think about the stories.
and lastly,
4. I love it when they come out in movie and I can compare the visions of what I thought the characters would look like and be like to what they are portrayed as on screen.
So, I guess those the main reasons why I read the chick-lit books.
My favorite books are those that are written by Jane Green, Meg Cabot, Sophie Kinsella, and Wendy Markham. I have also read two books by Emily Giffin called Something Borrowed and Something Blue that I enjoyed a lot also.
Hope that helps!

Sorry I'm so late responding, I hope its not too late to help out. I like reading chicklit because of the happy endings, the strong female characters and because in the end of the day I'm a romantic! Everyday life can have a lot of sadness and things don't always work out the way you planned where as in a good chicklit book you have humour, love and (nearly always) a wonderful happy ever after! I love all books by Julia Quinn because she has a great sense of humour aswell as strong females. I like Emily Giffin & Jane Green because their stories and characters are very modern. I like Lorna Landvik because she wrote that wonderful book about female friendship - Angry Housewives eating Bon Bons - and because I think it has to be the best title of a book ever!
I hope it helps and good luck with your thesis!

Sorry, just got your message. Why do I like Chick Lit? I don't think I ever outgrew Young Adult Lit., and Chick Lit seems a little bit like the grown up version of this. It's fun. It's an easy read. It's an escape for a few hours, like seeing a romantic comedy or such. My favorite Chick Lit books are the ones I've listed on my library thing page. I like Meg Cabot, Sarah Mlynowski. (Both of which are also YA writers.) Cecelia Ahern (does she count as Chick Lit?). I loved Kristen Buckley's "The Parker Grey Show." I really liked Lisa Tucker's "The Song Reader." Does that qualify as Chick Lit? And Pamela Ribon's "Why Girls are Weird." And I enjoyed Lauren Hogstead-Baratz's "Thin Pink Line" and "Crossing the Line." They seemed to take a different spin on the basic Chick Lit recipe which seems to be, single girl in NY or big city elsewhere, working in publishing/tv/movie world, dating, etc. They all sort of flow together in my head, even though I do enjoy them. They seem a lot the same and their plots flow together in my memory. I try to stay clear of the ones that are too steamy, too R rated, and too much like a romance novel with Fabio esqe men on the cover. Hope this helps.

I might be too little too late in writing you, but here goes... I wouldn't say that I like all "chick-lit" -- I like it insofar as I see characters that remind me of myself or my friends and plots that I can relate to, at least a little bit. My favorite chick-lit authors are Jennifer Weiner and Marian Keyes, because I feel they are among the least formulaic and the most concerned with women's issues beyond shoe shopping and losing weight! Also, one of my favorite chick-lit books is Darcy Cosper's WEDDING SEASON, because it, again, doesn't settle into the mandate that chick-lit must have the prince-and-white-steed IKEA happy ending. I guess, in sum, you could say that I like my chick-lit to have a bit of an edge--champagne and string quartets are nice, but this chick prefers chilled vodka and jazz-rock!

I enjoy reading chick lit because it deals with women in my age range (20-40) usually and is lighthearted and funny. Although I read everything from biographies to fantasy to romance, chick lit is great for when I am trying to unwind and jsut have fun reading a book. I don't have a favorite author, but love the Red Dress Ink books the best!
Hope this helps. Good luck!

I read a lot of chick-lit books a few years ago but I don't read them much any longer. These days I tend to read literary, crime or general mainstream fiction.
To answer your questions, I enjoy chick-lit because it is essentially escapist fiction. There's always romance, conflict and a happy ending. The heroine frequently has to overcome issues in her life to achieve her ambitions. My favourite chick-lit book was the Little Lady Agency, probably as it was an unusual concept with a creative heroine.
I hope that helps you! Good luck with your thesis.

I like to read chick lit, because they are funny and it is light reading. I also like to read crime books and romance novels and occasionally literature. I like to switch from genre to genre and chick lit is a welcoming bit of fresh air in between. The situations they end up in are so hilarious and sometimes unrealialistic, but I don't really care about that. It is nice to be in a different world from where I am normally in.
My favourites are the Shopaholic series, Bridget Jones Diary and Isobel's wedding for the simple reason that they made me laugh out loud :) and put a smile on my face!
I am Dutch, but I read the books in English.
Good luck with your thesis!

Not sure I have much to add about chick lit - I agree with the above comments. I enjoy all types of books and reading and my favorte book is Pride & Prejudice which seems chick-lit-like to me. I like to read chick-lit to escape and read something funny and light. I like that it is about women and how crazy we can be; how crazy our lives can be. Although they often get a little ridiculous at times, it's still funny and a good read none-the-less. My favorites are Bridget Jones (and the other books by Helen Fielding) and the Shopaholic series (and anything by Sophia Kinsella). I also have problems with my weight like Bridget and I like shopping and sometimes spend too much money just like Becky. I think most women could identify with parts of these books; we've all done stupid things and made mistakes and these books show that it's okay. Things can turn out in the end. Classic literature is good just like Oscar winning movies, but sometimes I just want to be entertained, laugh and have a good time so I turn to chick-lit and movies like My Big Fat Greek Wedding or Clueless. Maybe it is true: Girls do just want to have fun!
Hope this helps. Good luck in your studies!

I'm undoubtedly older than most chick lit readers, middle-aged, but still love chick lit. It's great escape fiction and it tells stories more of how young women are today than they were in my youth. There appear to be many more opportunities for young women today. My favorites would have to be the Shopaholic series. It just fascinates me how Becky can continue to delude herself about spending money. But then it shouldn't because I've run up some startling bills in bookstores, clearly nothing to match Becky's debts, but hard to pay down anyway!
Good luck with your thesis!

I read chick-lit because it's light reading - easy, and I don't have to concentrate much while I'm reading, so it's great for reading while I'm waiting around for an appointment, or any other situation where I might not have calm and quiet around me. I also like it because I can often see enough of myself in the characters to make it interesting. I'm a bit above the target age for most chick-lit, but I was a single working woman dealing with the "dating scene" once upon a time. There are also some books in the genre which are more than just "brain candy." In particular, I like Anna Maxted for tackling some touchy subject matter, and doing it well. Her books still have the overall feel of chick-lit - fresh, modern, singleton-looking-for-love - but there's more "meat" to them, as well.

I have a degree in English, which means that I spent four years reading almost nothing but the classics, poetry, and other fine literature. After graduation I migrated toward chick lit because of its frivolity...chick lit is, at its core, writte to entertain and transport the reader to a glamourized world of power jobs, finding Mr. Right, & manicures. The reason I still read chick lit is that I found a lot of books have a more feminist message, unlike the Cinderella stories of the past. Quite a few of the heriones have a more feminist slant, so I indulge my occasional desire for fluffy reads in chick lit rather than, say, gossip magazines. My favorites are Jennifer Wiener's and Megan Mccafferty's.

Also, my husband was a really good friend of mine when we first met. We went through a lot of she likes him but he doesn't like her and then he likes her but she's not into him before we eventually decided to start dating. I see a lot of this type of plot in chick-lit novels and it's fun to see a bit of my own love life reflected in these types of novels.
A third and final reason is that I like to read books by female authors. I think it's interesting to compare lead female characters written by women versus heroines written by men (as well as how male and female writers take on male leads too).
Hope this helps and good luck with the thesis!

Why have I said that I have outgrown it? I used to read it when I was in my early 20s, and quite a lot of it. Even then the similarities with each book, in plot or the way the plot ran out throughout the book .. turned me off. For example - Jane Green or Marian Keyes or Jennifer Weiner, where it would feel like you were reading the same book (or similar characters). I can only count a few books that I ended up really liking - Sushi For Beginners (Marian Keyes), Jemima J (Jane Green), the first non-Shopaholic book by Kinsella.
Fast forward, a few years later, something personal happens where i finally fall in love, at the ripe old age of 24 then get my heart broken about 2 years later. In the end I completely cannot stomach love - or how it's depicted in chick-lit. Or similarly even read women's magazines - since then I have not ever read Cosmopolitan, when I used to every single month. I wouldn't say it's the catalyst but then it just made it that in the end .. there was no point or enjoyment in reading chick-lit. It became a major annoyance. In the end it's a good thing as then I've been spending my reading time reading more worthwhile things (in my opinion).

A lot of the chick lit I have listed in my catalog are books that I read years ago. I don't really enjoy them much any more - I think I've outgrown that genre now.

My favourite 'chick lit' author is 'Marian Keyes' although I think I remember her saying in an interview she doesn't like that term. And really her books deal with more issues that just dealing with 'romance and lightheartedness'. The reason why she is one of my favourite authors is because I love her style and her humour is outstanding. I also like India Knight books as her sense of humour is similar to mine.
I think chick-lit is aimed at a wide audience of different ages, and as a mother of two, I still love reading easy going novels as well as 'deep meaningful' ones too.
It is a good way to relax and to have a leisurely hour or two of reading something which makes you feel happy and has you laughing out loud and feeling good about the world.
Good luck with your studies.

The reason why I read chick-lit? It's a palette cleanser for the brain! I also love classic literature and I find that jumping from one huge novel to the next can bog me down a bit. Sometimes it's nice to take a break and read something easy (especially on my endless NY subway commutes with people preaching, begging, dancing and singing, among other distractions). Chick-lit doesn't take too much thought and it's tons of fun! Sometimes I want a dry red wine and sometimes I want a shot of tequila, you know?
Best of luck to you!
PS- Marian Keyes is my favourite because it's funny stuff AND well written!

Well, being a female between 20 and 50 and all, I suppose I am the target audience for chick-lit. I mean, what other purpose does it have for existence?
It's not my other reading material, by any means. I also enjoy historical and adventure novels, non-fiction, and others.
But when I want some mindless brain-candy, you can't beat chick-lit. It's fun, it's fluffy, and it has absolutely no nutritional value. Kind of like cotton candy. Sometimes, you don't WANT to learn anything or get anything useful out of a book, you just want to have fun with it. There's really nothing more to it than that.
Best wishes -

The reason why I read chick-lit? There is more than one, but I feel I must say that I'm not a constant chick-lit or romance novel reader, it comes and goes as my life changes. Right now I'm at the end of a period of intensive reading- I'm a fast reader and I can read a book a day. The reason for my current obsession has to do a lot with my life situation at the moment- I've been living for the past couple of years in a foreign country, and it has been a struggle to adjust to all the changes- including the language. Since I can't really enjoy the escapism of watching an hour of TV when I feel I've had enough of life- Books have an added value...add that to the stress this relocation has put on my relationship with my boyfriend- and you can understand why a good dose of fantasy is something I enjoy so much.
I also must say that I enjoy most the books that I can relate to at some level- and thats why I don't read vampire or historical novels- they're too much for me..
I hope I helped...

I enjoy chick lit because I am a romantic and love romances. However, I prefer my books to have an actual plot (the "Romance" genre has a lot of books lacking in real plot), and I also dislike reading romances that are full of pornographic sex scene descriptions. These reasons are why I like chick lit so much, because it combines romance with an actual plot that is always uplifting, and because they typically side step the porn descriptions. I also enjoy reading them because they are often about single girls my own age (twenties) who find happiness and love, which is something I am looking for.
My favorite chick-lit books are those by Sophie Kinsella (Shopaholic bk 1 and Can You Keep a Secret, primarily), Sarah Mason (all her books), and Shanna Swendson (all her books). They are very funny as well as have interesting plots.

I don't just read only chick lit, though. I'm also trying to catch up on the classics and other popular fiction. I find that reading chick lit is a good way to give me a break from what could be serious subject matter. I find that although I don't always relate to the main characters in these chick lit books, I can identify with at least one aspect of them. The books these days seem to be a little more contemporary and something that could really happen, in comparison to, say, romance novels.
Some of my favorites are Marian Keyes 'Watermelon', Jennifer Weiner 'In Her Shoes', Sophie Kinsella 'Undomestic Goddess', Helen Fielding 'Bridget Jones's Diary'.

I like chick lit because it puts me in a good mood. I read other kinds of books, too, but chick lit is light-hearted and, while some people may think it's all the same, I find the books to be very varied. Some are funny, while others are more "serious", without being pretentious, like some other books.
My favorties are Angels by Marian Keyes (It was really funny and something I like to pick up and re-read every so often), The Devil Wears Prada (so addictive and deliciously malicious :D), and The Shopaholic Series by Sophie Kinsella, even though the main character is a total nut. :P
Hope that helped! If you have other questions don't hesitate to ask. :)
