Noticed you liked Girl Interrupted, and I was wondering if you'd be interested in reviewing my new novel and posting your comments here as well as a few other book-related sites. Thought you might like my book since it's also about a disturbed young girl's mental illness and also a bit dark. I could e-mail you the novel in an e-book format if you'd like (I'm out of physical copies at the moment). Let me know if you're interested. Here's a link to a summary in case you're interested:

Hi!

Whenever I open my Profile page, I see your name as we have quite a few books in common! Just popped in to say I'm very excited to see that you rated "The Bean Trees" and "Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress" so highly. They're both close to the top of my TBR pile at the moment.

Do you have a reading thread?
Hi - you asked about Away by Amy Bloom - -yes, I have an Early Reviewer - ARC edition of the book. I just finished it last night and thought it was stunning. The story follows Lillian, a recent immigrant from Russia who fled from Jewish persecution and the murder of her family. She finds unique ways to survive in 1923 New York; I don't know how much of the story to give away, but she attempts to journey back to Russia after she hears some news of her family. She spends time in Seattle where she ends up involved with a prostitute and an accidental death; then journeys up to Canada and Alaska and endures some unimagineable hardships.

Bloom is a wonderful writer, her characterizations were brilliant and she has a way of telling the outcome of some of the characters' stories that would ordinarily fade away.

You asked what it was like -- I'm not sure I've read anything quite like it before.

I really loved this book and recommend it highly.
Hi, Yes, of course I remember you. No, I have read If Today be Sweet. I'm afraid I am way behind in arc reading - I'm sure most of the books have come out already (except for maybe two:-) It's amazing, after a good nine years of reading 6 months ahead, I've recentered myself (I admit I thought it would be more difficult). Hope you have enjoyed your first six months on LT! Best, Lois
I think your reading is terrific for only being in high school! And your choice of ARCs reveal a relatively sophisticated taste. And I'm amazed that the store you work for only has three shelves of ARCs, the store I work for has mountains of them! And, if you know something's coming out (maybe you saw it in, say, Publishers Weekly), ask for an ARC from your store's sales rep or the publisher directly. As long as it's going to be mailed to a store address they are usually quite accommodating.

You haven't posted much information about yourself on your profile, are you shy? :-) I think it's fascinating that there is a place where people from different continents, different ages, races, education levels and so on can come together and have conversations about the thing they share, books! I'd recommend jumping right in and finding the groups that are interesting for any number of reasons.

btw, Nunatuk, also has ARCs and she writes a review for everyone she enters. She has read the new Lethem (as has my husband) and she was the one to recommend Zoli to me. Best, Lois
Hi, yes, I've accumulated ARC's from 9 years at the bookstore. Even though I left at the end of November they still let me rifle through their piles (since very few in the store read literary fiction). How about yourself? Are you a bookseller? librarian?

I very much enjoyed Astrid & Veronika and not so long ao, a mystery arc, The Blood Split by Asa Larsson, also set in Sweden. My piles of To Be Read novels are so huge!

I see you are new, welcome! I hope you're enjoying being a part of LT. One gets out of it, what they put into it, I think. I'm enjoying the conversations I'm having and have made some great book buddy friends all over the world.

Best, Lois
