About meI enjoy books so much but I ruthlessly and regularly cull my library to try to keep it manageable in case I move or whatever. Unfortunately there seems to be a bare minimum of paper tonnage I cannot live without. Places like gutenberg.org are awesome for keeping public-domain books readily accessible without having to kill too many trees, but there's just something about holding a book in one's hands, looking around a room and seeing your nice full shelves, and so forth. So my last move involved lots of my moving helpers becoming quite irritated with me. At first they thought it would be the easiest move they'd ever helped with, as they hauled, up 3 flights of stairs to my tiny attic apartment, a chair, a computer desk, a futon mattress, and a few boxes of clothes...but then we got to the ministorage and they saw the yarn and the bookshelves and the 50 boxes of books. Good grief--that was the minimum I could not live without? And I had to go out and buy 2 more bookshelves to actually unpack the suckers.
Anyway, I guess I have to work that out if I'm going to travel light, but that's me. So, Library Thing rocks. What a great idea for a website...Amazon was previously my favorite site but oh dear, I fear I've moved on.
About my libraryMost of the books I keep around are books that are a) not in the public domain yet, and b) good friends. Other books that have gone through my hands usually get passed on for someone else to enjoy if I think they'd just be collecting dust on my shelves. I do have some which I keep around because I think they fill out a collection of hard-to-come-by reference materials nicely even though I may not refer to them often personally or find them particularly valuable, I lend them out a lot so I keep them in my collection.
And I do have some books which I buy and then don't quite get around to reading for a while, but for the most part I've read all of the books listed in my library. I've read a lot that aren't in it as well, due to the aforementioned practice of passing my books along to new owners regularly, but one of my favorite things about Library Thing is getting suggestions for new things I might like to read because there will never be enough time to read it ALL, so guidance is welcome! Check out my reviews and if you'd like to talk in more detail about ANY book in my library, or if you have a recommendation you think I'd like based on what you see of my tastes, or if you are now madly in love with my bookshelves and want to move in with me and shamelessly use me for my mind, I would dearly love to hear from you.
