Dear Fangorn: How could I leave out one of the "Inklings", a close friend of Tolkien. Both of them had a fond love for ancient things, especially language. I wonder if that isn't why Clive Staples Lewis made his character, Ransom, a philologist. He spends a good deal of time in "Out of the Silent Planet" developing the landguage of the Hross culture. When I was young, that same distant relative, who gave me "Pictorial Pilgrim's Progress", gifted me with "The Siver Chair", which is still my favorite of the Narnian tales. If I was going to be anyone in that story, it would be sober-minded, stout-hearted, Puddleglum. As far as ancient languages go, I dabble in Old English (i.e. Beowulf, The Dream of the Rood, etc.) and NT Greek. I would love to find a book on Old Norse, since I read some Norwegian. Reading the Old English, it is easy to see where Tolkien got many of his place and character names from. God bless. "You are beloved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ ... keep yourself in the love of Christ." (Jude) yangguy (Larry)
Dear Fangorn: We share "The Works of John Bunyan". When I was eight years old, Abba Father brought me to His Son, Jesus, through the gift of a distant relative. In 1962, she sent me a copy of "Pictorial Pilgrim's Progress". I read it time and again. I didn't realize until recently that it was that small book that convicted me of sin, the coming Judgment and the righteousness of Christ. Moody Press recently reprinted it. I see that you are also a J.R.R. Tolkien reader, as is our family. My first exposure to Middle Earth was in high school when a fellow classmate did a book report on the Hobbit. Even though my interest was piqued, it was still several years before I started reading Tolkien. Just recently I added Augustine to my library and am slowly plodding through both the English and the Latin. God bless. Larry Hovee (yangguy)
