About meb. 1959 - Scot, mother of two, retired town planner, community activist and dabbler in various activities (while being master of none): reading, gardening, art, dance, listening to music, walking, putting the world to rights while eating and drinking with friends or extended family.

Was an early bookworm but lost concentration around the late eighties (kids) till I joined a couple of book groups, both now defunct.

Reading aims are to continue the book group ethos of mixing ambitious reads with a few potboilers and to learn something new along the way. Life aims I've not figured out yet.

About my libraryMy library reflects the fact I much prefer fiction - the non-fiction tends to be interest-related (gardening, art, interiors, cooking) or books I've been given as gifts.

I like romance in its broadest sense: epics spanning long timescales, books set against interesting periods of history (Russian revolution, American civil war) or in other cultural contexts (India and Japan for example) and great characters.

Some books are favourites because I read them at a particular time in my life and they made an impression, some for sheer enjoyment or for admiration for the writer's craft. They include To Kill a Mockingbird, First Love, Last Rites, Waiting for the Barbarians, Cloud Atlas, and Pride and Prejudice.

Authors I like and come back to often include Jane Austen, George Elliot, David Mitchell, JM Coetzee, Julian Barnes, William Boyd, Donna Tartt, Ali Smith, Sebastian Barry and Ian McEwan.

I've also acquired some books from my husband by a kind of osmosis - they've ended up in my TBR pile because they are 'worthy' reads but whether I'll ever get round to a history of the Bolshevik Revolution in three volumes is another matter....
