About meI was born in New York City, attended Hunter College High School, and majored in Classics at Harvard. My husband and I lived in London, New Guinea, and San Francisco before settling in the Boston area, first in Brookline and now in Cambridge. I've been involved in literary journalism for three decades. In 2000, I edited Other People's Mail: An Anthology of Letter Stories, which was published by the University of Missouri Press (http://home.comcast.net/~gailpool). My new book is Faint Praise: The Plight of Book Reviewing in America, a critique of reviewing that discusses how the field works and why it so often fails. (www.reviewingbooks.com)
About my libraryBecause my work has been so focused on books, my library reflects different aspects of my writing life. As a book reviewer, I've had columns on fiction, travel literature, and mysteries, and I've acquired many books in those areas, as well as many volumes on criticism. In a decade of writing about the magazine field, I collected numerous books on the press. And as a longtime writing instructor, I have many writing reference books. My largest collection, though, is fiction, which is what I most enjoy reading. I've also begun cataloging the cartography collection of my husband, Jeremy Pool, who is a map collector, head of the Boston Map Society, and publisher of the Antique Map Price Record (www.maprecord.com), a guide to the map field that has been published since 1983.

I am delighted to see your homepage! I just started a thread on the 999group on what people want in book reviews, since many of us have indicated that we were going to write reviews on the books that we read. I must check it out!
Thanks!
DS
