About meSchool administrator living out in the woods in the Northern Catskills with my wife and two teen-aged boys. Lifelong reader.
About my libraryAlways knew I'd live way out in the country, so I haunted the ten cent racks at used book stores until I had more good books than I'd ever be able to read while living too far from libraries and bookstores. Mixed fiction and non-fiction. I value good writing over subject; thus, for instance, John McPhee and anything he writes about.
It will be a while before I get my whole library entered. Right now, I have comlpeted:
- Biography
- General non-fiction
- Science Fiction
- General Fiction through 'Q'
- Collections of newspaper columns by columnists
- Various bookshelves scattered through the house containing a wide variety of books
Not yet begun in earnest:
- History
- Nature
- Collections of plays, poetry, stories
- Cartoon collections
As it turns out, I am able to live surrounded by hundreds of acres of forest, meadows, streams and mountains and still access a pretty good small city public library (Huntington Memorial Library in Oneonta, NY) where I work. So reading habits cannot always be inferred by analyzing the collection. I've read (from the library), but don't own: most of Russell Banks; Sean McMullen's Greatwinter Trilogy, most of T. Coraghessan Boyle, Bill Bryson, etc. In addition, the library has a moderate-size book tape collection, so my hour-long round-trip commute expands my 'reading' time. Authors I've never read, but whose works I've listened to extensively: Elizabeth George, Patricia Cornwell, Robert B. Parker, Dean Koontz, and others.
I also borrow book tapes from the library,
