About meI am 32 years old. I fell in love with collecting books after turning into an English Lit major in college. Currently I am working for Hmong American Partnership, after spending two years doing AmeriCorps. I love books. I love reading. I have become obsessed with book swapping sites online (www.paperbackswap.com, www.bookmooch.com). I will buy books at garage sales and such and then swap them for books I really want. Greatest invention ever!

About my libraryI read mostly fiction, some memoir type stuff. I love magical realism, outdoorsy books, anything set in the american west and world literature (chinese, indian, middle eastern and latin american).

I have been collecting for about 10 years now, and my books are starting to outgrow me both in space and time.

And yes, I actually own all the books in my catalog here...

I see we have some books in common and a similar taste for swapping books. I'm interested in what you do with Minnesota Literacy Council? The librarian at the school I teach at and I have created a Book Worm club and are always on the lookout for promoting literacy ideas.

Sarah, Have noticed you haven't posted anything in a while. Are you doing okay? How did your surgery turn out? I was just wondering how you were. I've always enjoyed looking at your journal and seeing how your were doing on you National Park trips. Hope you are okay.

Sarah, how did you like the book Wicked? And have you seen the play. I've read the book and my wife and I went to see the play in Tulsa. I thought the book was a very good read and loved the play.

goldiebear: Thanks for writing back so quickly. And thank you, thank you, thank you for the suggestions. I have read a couple of your picks, the Khaled Hosseinis and "The Bookseller of Kabul." (Because I can't find a record of the latter in my personal library, I'm guessing I borrowed it.) I own "What is the What", "One Hundred Years of Solitude" and "Snow Flower". The other two I haven't heard of at all. I'll definitely check them out.

I'm currently reading "Dreamers of the Day" by Mary Doria Russell. The majority of the story is set in Cairo during the Cairo Conference (is that right? I'm not sure) which was attended post-WWI by T. E. Lawrence, Winston Churchill, and Gertrude Bell. It is just excellent and very relevent.

You have a wonderful and fascinating library! I found you because you mentioned not liking (so much) "Falling Man". Anyway, could you do two things for me: 1) Your five(-ish) top books of Middle-Eastern lit, and 2) (however many) top world lit reads. If you don't mind, that is. I have been feeling woefully "lemming-ish" lately; that I read too much "popular" literary fiction. Thanks so much!

If you like world literature and magical realism, you might consider reading "Shalimar the Clown" by Salman Rushdie. It's really an amazing book. It follows Shalimar from his once-happy childhood in Kashmir to his marriage to his village sweetheart; from her abandonment of him for another man to his revenge on her and her child. On the way, he becomes a heartless terrorist. The description of his emotional spiral is at once surprisingly touching and naturally repellant. Rushdie displays the best of his talent with this book.

I haven't had much time to read the last couple of days. So far, The Secret History is very good, but I haven't read much at all. I'll let you know when I read more!

By the way, I was reading a few of your blog reviews. Did you know the man that Dave Eggers based What is the What was speaking at Magers and Quinn last month? I missed it and I really wanted to go. I haven't read the book yet.
