About meI write and study and review memoirs.
I began writing for publication in August of 1968 when I was a musicology student trapped in the Soviet Invasion of Czechoslovakia. I wrote my first newspaper article about the experience, was hired as a newspaper reporter while still at university and then attended the Columbia School of Journalism. Later I freelanced for the New York Times and other magazines before turning to writing books. I still do occasional reviwing for the Philadelphia Inquirer.
