I have uploaded a cover for The Sword of the Republic: The United States Army on the Frontier, 1783–1846 by Francis Paul Prucha. This is from the 1969 Macmillan hardcover edition.
Success is to be measured not so much by the
position that one has reached in life
as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed."
Booker T. Washington, 1856-1915

"Sleep, riches, and health, to be truly enjoyed must be interrupted."

(--Jean Paul Richter)

"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams.

Live the live you have imagined...regardless of circumstances thrown your way."

(--Henry David Thoreau)
Yes, I know the style! Love to have that. Unfortunately have a 1980s style cape with yucky kitchen cabinets we can't wait to replace. The walls are a nice cheery yellow though. Will keep that. *sigh* Houses... they ARE money pits. Shovel... shovel....
LOL! Endless aisles of 'treasure' is exactly right. And weirder than weird, out basement steps DO lead into the kitchen.

So what color were the walls? Huh? Huh?
Okay. Why don't you go to Ancient History and start a conversation with your reformatted posts, mentioning that I was curious what others think. [We don't want them thinking your 'attacking' me behind my back--lol ;.]
Those are some excellent points, HB. Would it be okay if I copied your response in a post on the Ancient History group so we can discuss with others. I think there'd be some interest in this and I'd like to get some other opinions.

Again, I don't mind being called into question. I'm too much of an academic at heart to be bothered by thoughtful criticism.
The series is so good, so far. The production quality is top notch so you must track it down.

I was hoping, btw, that the publicist would send out a DVD to give away, but she didn't :(

Oh well.
That was so kind of you to search through Amazon for the book suggestions. Really, thank you.

Whatcha been up to?
LOL also: Burgess Meredith! That photo sure is a far cry from his later "Keep your head low and duck, Rocky."
Don't worry. I just posted about how cold it was and how my cat went out to potty.

So beat that :)
Yes, I'm enduring the Chicago weather, but it's not so bad. I grew up out in the suburbs (Glen Ellyn) in the 70s, when we had some winters that put this one to shame.
I wouldn't really call the Douglas book a popular history, at least in the implied sense of "not scholarly". It was one of the first books in the English Monarchs (now Yale English Monarchs) series, and as far as I know, it's still more or less the standard scholarly history of William the Conqueror, though of course there have been lots of new discoveries and interpretations in the 45 years since then. It's got a lot of detail, especially about the history of Normandy and William's pre-Conquest days, but it's very readable (as these things go).
Learning a language is good. I want to learn French but have not worked it into my schedule, so no progress.

And the html thing is for the blog. The one for kid's books, in particular, needs some work so that it can be more useful to folks. I'm also tired of the boring colors.

As for boredom... be GLAD you have a job.
Hi guy; looks like you're having fun. Cheers A
Oops. Forgot the book link.

It was good, wasn't it. I think that episode sums up the fears of many LTers ;]

Medieval Book

Very hard to make a selection, so I cheated ;]

Here's book by Warren Hollister. It's a great broad introduction. He was the mentor of my mentor.

Other than that here's what LT says:

Merry Christmas, buddy!
I'm almost finished. But with shopping and all... I'm way behind where I'd like to be.

Worse, I've started reading another 'fluffier' book that's about a reporter's search for Percy Fawcett. Col. Fawcett was a Geo. Society member who disappeared while looking for a lost empire in the Amazon. It's good thus far. "Lost City of Z"

I find when I'm tired I need a lighter read. Whada bout you?
Yes, it's a bit avant garde. But don't you like the Christmas-y colors :)

I'm still reading the Walt Whitman and the Civil War book. I wish I knew your reading preferences well enough to know if you would like it.

Have you read anything fabulous lately?
Articles of War was indeed just off Dempster in Skokie. If you are interested, they are having a 35% off sale through December 15 on all Osprey items.

ALB is just too dangerous. Anyway, my ACW to-read stack will take years to go through.
Like the member name (fits me to a T) and I'll ditto the photo selection.
Yes, I think this guy is the poster-child of the nightmares of most of the LibraryThingers. :-)
LOL!!! Love your photo. I remember that episode well :)
