About meIncurable collector of quotes.

On books and reading:

A book must be an ice-axe to break the seas frozen inside our soul. ~Franz Kafka

Medicine for the soul. ~Inscription over the door of the Library at Thebes

To feel most beautifully alive means to be reading something beautiful, ready always to apprehend in the flow of language the sudden flash of poetry.~Gaston Bachelard

A good book is the purest essence of a human soul. ~Thomas Carlyle

…..a great book that comes from a great thinker is a ship of thought, deep freighted with truth and beauty.
~Theodore Parker

When the Day of Judgment dawns and the great conquerers and lawyers and statesmen come to receive their rewards - their crowns, their laurels, their names carved indelibly upon imperishable marble - the Almighty will turn to Peter and will say, not without a certain envy, when he sees us coming with our books under our arms, "Look, these need no reward. We have nothing to give them here. They have loved reading." ~ Virginia Woolf

On children and reading:

You may have tangible wealth untold;
Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold.
Richer than I you can never be -
I had a mother who read to me.
~Strickland Gillilan

Children are made readers on the laps of their parents. ~ Emilie Buchwald

What is the use of a book', thought Alice, 'without pictures or conversations?' ~ Lewis Carroll

There is no substitute for books in the life of a child.
~ Mary Ellen Chase

It is a great thing to start life with a small number of really good books which are your very own.
~ Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

The more that you read,
the more things you will know.
The more that you learn,
the more places you'll go.
~ Dr. Seuss

MY BOOK!
I did it!
I did it!
Come and look
At what I’ve done!
I read a book!
When someone wrote it
Long ago
For me to read,
How did he know
That this was the book
I’d take from the shelf
And lie on the floor
And read by myself?
I really read it!
Just like that!
Word by word,
From first to last!
I’m sleeping with
This book in bed,
This first FIRST book
I’ve ever read!
~ David L. Harrison
(from Somebody Catch My Homework)

There should be a little voice in your head like the storyteller is saying it. And if there's not, then you're just lookin' at the words. ~LaKeisha (9th Grader in San Francisco)

Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him. ~ Richard McKenna

It is not enough to simply teach children to read; we have to give them something worth reading. Something that will stretch their imaginations, something that will help them make sense of their own lives and encourage them to reach out toward people whose lives are quite different from their own. ~ Katherine Paterson

Books to the reading child are so much more than books. They are dreams and knowledge, they are a future and a past. ~ Esther Maynell

And,

Very young children eat their books, literally devouring their contents. This is one reason for the scarcity of first editions of Alice in Wonderland and other favorites of the nursery. ~ A. S. W. Rosenbach

About my libraryIt was clear that the books owned the shop rather than the other way about. Everywhere they had run wild and taken possession of their habitat, breeding and multiplying and clearly lacking any strong hand to keep them down.
~ Agatha Christie

When I get a little money, I buy books; and if any is left, I buy food and clothes. ~ Desiderius Erasmus 1466-1536

Far more seemly were it for thee to have thy study full of books, than thy purse full of money. ~John Lyly

Where is human nature so weak as in the bookstore? ~ Henry Ward Beecher

Books to the ceiling,
Books to the sky.
My pile of books
Is a mile high.
How I love them!
How I need them!
I'll have a long beard
By the time I read them.
~ Arnold Lobel

Thanks for your message Jo! I've been adding more books than usual lately since a friend of mine started cleaning his house. I loved the audio version of Anam Cara and I can't imagine enjoying it any other way.
I think you got me on the Anatomy of the Spirit. I think I put that one in when I was supposed to be typing Invisible Acts of Power! Good catch! I really like C. Myss, although others try to compare her to Sylvia Browne or Judith Orloff, I really think it's "apples to oranges".
The most recent books I've read that we share have been Labyrinths and a Year By the Sea. I hope I don't get distracted too long that I forget to read the next book by Joan Anderson!
Thanks for stopping by! ~Christine.
