About my library Just what I own.
I know some folks use LT for wishlists, or for books they've read, but don't own. More power to them.. though when I browse through someone's else catalog, I can't help but think, "Cool. They've made an effort to have on hand all the books they love, or admire, or want around to flip to just that one passage- the one that makes them feel they have a place in this world." Anyway, this is not even a tenth of what I'd like to have on my shelves, but I'm ever-so-slowly working on it.

Thanks! I'm glad if I didn't come across sounding preachy...

I'll go on then and add 'politics' tag to EH's books (hopefully) when appropriate.

And I know I'm a day late, but anyway:

Hauskaa Vappua! (Happy May Day!)

-Nina
Thanks for asking, I'm fine! I didn't mean to disappear, I've just been a little busy. :)

I think there's probably more interest in EH's library than we realize. Those that are interested might just not comment or blog about it right away... The way I see it, this is not something that gets a lot of attention all at once, but rather something that crops up in different contexts over time. Something with lasting power.

I've done less tagging than I planned, but I see that you (and nperrin?) have taken up the slack? For me, tagging is still fun, but it is slow going now, especially with fiction.

What do you think about 'politics' as a tag? Seems to me there's quite a lot of untagged books that would fit that description.
Great announcement. :) I'm hoping that as a result of your message and the library showing up in the Legacy page, EH will get more comments, suggestions or help with the tagging.

The profile page looks really good, too. Thanks for taking the time and making the effort!

-Nina
Fitzgerald is done - just today, actually! You caught me before I could post about it. :)
Congrats!!! Excellent work indeed. I'll switch him over right now. Thanks for all your hard work!
Heh, oenology, mixology...you started it!

I like the idea of Papa H making the announcement (with the poker game thing, too).

I've finished my duplicates, and christiguc has done her entries. Are we done with the book entries?

-Nina
I like your idea, it sounds fine as you've got it--I think corny might be a good thing in this case. After all, we did just spend I-don't-want-to-know-how-many hours cataloguing the books of a dead man. How much dorkier can we really be?
I think you or nperrin should make the announcement.

I may not be able to get the remaining 60 done until after work today, and then I'll look into your tagging style to help you both on that. Have you and Nina been following a certain format?

Christina
Ok, I'll take the duplicates from 6828 onwards.

Oh, you should definitely make the announcement, as long as you remember to take credit for what you yourself have done. :) You and nperrin have been the driving forces of this effort.

When it is finished, I hope there will be a lot of interested Hemingway fans looking through his library. Do you think we should ask for help with the tagging or spotting errors in the data? Personally, I think tagging is going to get more time consuming from here on. There are a lot of books with no LoC subject matter or pre-existing LT tags.

-Nina
I've finished entering my duplicates. I could do some more, if there's still any left.

By the way, this is part of a message I left christiguc (heh, maybe we should go back to posting in the thread): "On the subject of cataloging errors, I noticed that there are two different books numbered #5967 and #5967a respectively, which means that there are at least 7369 entries in the catalog, not 7368."

-Nina
Heh, yes, what could be more interesting than entering a bunch of duplicates...

I too noticed that there were a number of books with a gay theme. I don't think it would be editorializing to tag them as such. You can see it anyway in the tag mirror. There's a book about superfluous hair removal and another about electroshock therapy that I would be more hesitant to tag.

If you decide to go with 'fishes', the next would be 'rocks'? :)

-Nina
I have a catalog problem I need advice for (I've left a message for Rullakartiina as well)

In EH's catalog, #5191 is Big Game Shooting by Phillipps-Wolley, Clive (MH)
#7246 is Big Game Shooting by Wolley, Clive Phillips (kwfv)

Should this be treated as a catalog error so that we do one entry (kwfv MH)? Or should I enter another copy of the book for MH?

I'm leaning towards thinking it's an accidental double-entry and have left it off for now. Let me know what you think.

Christina
I finished entering the 5401-5500 range. I haven't entered my duplicates, yet, or checked for combinations.

Tagging:
No, you were right, there really weren't that many books that could be tagged children's fiction. Especially with the new 'historical fiction' tag in use. I removed the tag.

There is a lot of books relating to travel, isn't there?. Maybe there should be a separate 'travelogue' tag, though it might be difficult to determine which of the books fit the description.

BTW, I love the 'birds' tag. Simple and to the point. :)

-Nina
I changed 'aeronautics' to 'aviation', but I left 'travel guide' alone. There's now a separate 'travel' tag, consisting mainly of travelogues, I think.

About half of the books have tags now. I guess there is still a lot of fiction untagged, as well as books of nature/wildlife/animals or natural history. There seems to be a number of books that could be tagged 'historical fiction'. Is that too specific, considering the books will probably also be tagged as 'fiction' and '... literature'?

(As for my my English skills: there are large gaps there, trust me. But thanks anyway.)

-Nina
Tag mirrors are up again. I looked at EH's and there are no big surprises. Well, maybe it is surprising that it is fairly representative, since a lot of EH's books are untagged by others or even us at this point.

It did give me some ideas. I'd like to make two changes: replace the tag 'aeronautics' with 'aviation' and the tag 'travel guide' with just 'travel'. From the specific to the general, so to speak.:) What do you think?

-Nina
I'll do the same with the duplicate copies that I've entered. Thanks for letting me know about the problem.

Frankly, I'd be happy if you 'claim' tags. Some nuances of meaning are lost to me as an ESL speaker. :)

I'll also be checking the original language data in all the entries. It is frequently missing even when LoC is used.

-Nina
Re: tagging

I think 'Catholicism' probably should have its own tag in EH's (a converted Catholic)library. 'Religion' as a top tag for all religious and spiritual books?

Sorry about the 'elephants' and 'mushrooms'. I couldn't resist, was feeling a bit whimsical...

'Wildlife', 'nature' and 'animals' all sound good to me. There's also the LoC subject 'zoology', but that might be too specific.

"I still have nature/natural history, marine biology, oceanography, communism, pulp fiction, Soviet Union in mind." These are great.
Good (next) morning to you, too!

I'll start with the 5401-5500.

-Nina
I finished my 3801-3900. Still a little bit of combining to do. I could take a hundred or two of christiguc's entries, if needed.

About tagging: I've been using the 'memoir' tag as you suggested. There's still some personal narratives where it does not fit. 'Military history' might be a useful tag, though there would be serious overlap with the different 'war' tags. I'd rather tag books with no tags than the ones that already have one or more. And speaking of un-tagged books: any suggestions as to how the spiritual/religious books could be tagged?

-Nina
About EH's posthumous novels: yes, I went with the assumption EH's manuscripts weren't that different from the published versions and so I added the books without any publication data. But I'm not at all certain this is the best way to handle them. What do you think? Also, I'm pretty sure there are short story collections missing from the list of his works that I used, so it is still a work in progress.

Yep, that's me tagging...feel free to change them or leave me a message, if you notice mistakes. Question: would the 'memoir' tag be appropriate for the books that are personal narratives? And BTW, 'exploration' = great tag!
I'll go ahead then. Oh, and no rush with the replying. There aren't that many LTers in my timezone anyway, so I'm certainly not expecting immediate replies from anyone.

-Nina
The last batch went easier than I expected, so I could take more Hemingway. Say 3801-3900?

-Nina
Heh, yes, I figured there would be more than enough Hemingway to go around...

I'll get to work on the 3901 - 4000.

Thanks for the tagging compliment.:) I wish I could do more, but as I'm not that familiar with his books, tagging by LoC subject (when it's included) is about as much as I can do.

-Nina
Hi!

I could put in about a hundred Hemingway entries. Are there any left?

-Nina
Joel! I loved On Agate Hill! Thank you so much (again) for sending it to me. My review is posted on LT and on my blog, if you would like to read it.

Happy Reading!
Jill
Hi, Joel: I just saw on the LT blog that you helped with the Thomas Jefferson project. How cool! I am enjoying looking through his library.

Take care,
Jill
Glad you got and liked your LT Secret Santa books! Happy New Year.
Hey! I accidentally "unflagged" your flag of the Kary Mullis pic. Or, rather, I intentionally unflagged it, not realizing this one of those "dead author" deals. So go ahead and re-flag it. (After I saw my error, I also flagged it.)

Sorry!
RE: Arkady & Boris

Those sorts of pages are never finished! The minute you think you're done, someone comes along with a brand-new spelling of a name.

By the way, I noticed there was a suggested combination of "Igor and Boris" (http://www.librarything.com/author/strou...). The titles don't seem to be the same as any of the ones under "Arkady and Boris", but a) my French ain't all that good, and b) sometimes titles change completely when translated! Do you know if these are really Arkady & Boris?
I finally got around to joining. Thanks for telling me about Library Thing.
I appreciate the tip -- I made the change in my profile. Guess I overlooked that earlier.
Thanks! I just today saw your comment -- I guess we're not notified when comments are left.
Thanks for noticing! Doyle is such a pain because there are so many slightly different editions, and he wrote such a lot.
Thanks for unflagging me! There are a few Chris Mansell's - and at least one other who is a writer - this might have lead to the confusion.
Not Aruba. Venice. Just got back after a fabulous week. The only drawback was that a week is way too short!
~back at you~

I've unflagged the image of Chris Mansell, who is user writerlink.

;-))
(I posted this in the Author pictures group, too.)

The picture that shows up for me on Kelly Link's page has a large frame around it and the text "Click here for hi-res download" below it. Did you only get permission from the author to use only this version, or can we replace it with the hi-res version? (Or at least remove the frame and the text?)
Nicely done! I like your post for the haunted soda turning the dangling car into car-otid.
Hi! My answers are still up on the thread - I just changed the text color to white, so you have to highlight to see them against the background.
My father and niece and one brother in Nashville and another brother near Cookeville. (My uncle is an outlier in Memphis.) I went to MTSU and my husband went to Vanderbilt. I also used to be familiar with Franklin and Columbia but not anymore.

What part are you from?
My initial reaction to your photo above was: 'Not Lookout Mt. What other high places are nearby?' Then read your profile.
I was born and raised in Middle Tennessee and a lot of my family still lives there.
So are you saying that your flagging finger is flagging? ;-))
Hmmm, looks like we have some flag abusers on your "greengrocer's apostrophe" thread. Perhaps they work in the K-Mart book department?
You're a permission machine. Very impressive! I think I'm taking a break from requesting (although I didn't realize it)
But admit that you cut-n-pasted "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious".

I didn't! I swear! I guessed.

Must admit, I had fun trying to top your comments! ;-)
"I do love it when you type in Cyrillic."

LOL! It's called "cutting-and-pasting". Glad you enjoy it. ;-)
Esther takes nice photos.
Hey, I've done it myself!

The Pulitzer thing is nice, isn't it? I've been pleasantly surprised at how readily I've been getting permissions from authors and organizations.

By the way, I've been intending to tell you that I've been enjoying your clever comments when you flag pictures. Much more interesting that the usual "need permission"!
