About meHey there: I'm Joe Hill, author of Heart-Shaped Box, 20th Century Ghosts, and a comic book, Locke & Key. I'm socially networked to the gills, what with the website (see below), the message board, and the MySpace page... that said, LibraryThing is a particularly favorite stop of mine on the intraweeb, as it scratches my natural itch to obsess over my reading.

About my libraryI've been keeping a private diary of books read for over two decades now. I also end each year by making a list of my ten or so favorite books. All those lists are here for anyone with an interest in seeing them. The earliest is my top ten from 1990, which records my favorite books from the year I turned 18.

In 2007, I kept track of just about everything I read here on LibraryThing. That's right, you can review the whole sorry story for yourself; just check the tag marked BOOKS READ - 2007.

Here in 2008, I seem to be doing a lot of research. And because I like to stay private about works in progress, I won't be publicly listing everything I read this year. But I'll still be around, checking in on comments, and at the end of the year I'll stick up a top ten from 2008.

Recently, over on my website, I started a little book club: Words + Pictures. Readers convene on an irregular schedule, two or three times a year, to read and discuss a novel and a graphic novel paired together. For example, this October we're reading AMERICAN WIFE by Curtis Sittenfeld and AMERICAN WIDOW by Alissa Torres and Sungyoon Choi. No telling what the next novel + comic pair will be, but it's likely we'll cover a broad variety of genres (I was thinking maybe Alan Moore's TOP TEN and Jon Lethem's FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE for a "capes" theme). If I can figure out how to do it, I'll create a group here on LibraryThing, and we can do the book club thing here as well as on my message board.

Hi Joe:
I am so excited and cannot wait to read NOS4A2!
Counting the days until it appears on my Kindle.
All the best,
Tony
NYC
Hi Joe
Just wanted to drop by and say HELLO. And to ask if you are working on anything "New" and when can we expect a new title. I lvoed HORNS and can't wait for more.
Thanks,
Tony
Joe Hill, whoa!
I've just this minute finished Heart-Shaped Box and I'll tell you, I was suprised. Reading the blurb I couldn't figure out how in the blue hell a story about a ghost could last four-hundred pages and from the blurb (I'll be honest, ha-ha) I thought the story was going to quite dull but, boy did you prove me wrong.
I'll review it later on, I'm thinking of giving Heart-Shaped Box a four and a half rating; reason I wouldn't give it five is only because it isn't the best book I've read, it's brilliant but not the best.
What I like about you as a author is that you took on the pseudonym of Joe Hill to avoid being associated with your father, this is a pretty ballsy thing to do I think because Stephen King being known to be the best storyteller of all-time (so on and so forth) you're up against one helluva challenge! But I think you're gonna make it just as good as he has.
I'm happy I've found out about you before you wrote to many books because I remember discovering yo pop's works and saw he had already wrote over fifty by the time I started reading. But with you, you're only on your third book now (Horns, I'm so goin' to read it after reading Heart-Shaped Box, because your a bloody good writer) so every year or whatever you bring out a new book I haven't got to worry about the other fifty-something because I still have to read.

Whoaaaaaa, sorry that's a long comment ha-ha. Jord :)
Hi Joe!

I've recently read "Heart-Shaped Box" and "20th Century Ghosts"... and like others before me, I just want to let you know that I really appreciate your work! But I'll be honest, I have preferred 20thCG over HSB. ;o) My favorite story was "Pop Art", it was so weird and moving at the same time. A close call with "You Will Hear The Locust Sing" I must say. I'm a fan of those giant insects movies so that's probably why I enjoyed this one so much!

That being said, I'll definitely get my hands on "Locke & Key: Welcome to Lovecraft" and "Horns" too...
Hi Joe,

Just wanted to let you know that I am about 2/3 of the way through Heart-Shaped Box, and finding it difficult to put down. So far it has made me late for work and very tired, as I keep wanting to stay up reading it. Thanks for a terrific read!
Noticed you on the home page under "author birthdays" - Happy Birthday!
I am loving Horns and don't want it to end. Can't wait for your next book.
Joe-
Just finished HORNS. Had to tell you. this is one of the best books I have read this year, Hell, in a long time.
Thank you.I look forward to your future works.
Tony
Hi Joe
In the middle of reading HORNS and had to let you know how much I am enjoying it. Thanks so much for IG, he is a great character.
All the best,
Tony
Hi, Joe.
Just received Horns in the mail a few days ago, having ordered it from RiverRun Bookstore in order to get a signed copy. (Thanks for helping out the independents!) I have to say, man, when I opened it to the title page and saw the personalization, I literally burst out laughing! That's the most awesome signing I've ever received! You made my day with that one!
I'm really looking forward to reading the book.
Thanks again!
John
Just wanted to say thanks for 'Horns'. It was one of the strongest, most thrilling, and most emotional books I've read in a very long time. In fact, off the top of my head, I can't think of any book that I've read in the past six months that can compete with it, except for maybe 'Wonder Boys' by Michael Chabon, and that's some damn good company.
Hi Joe:

I don't buy many books, as many as I read I can't afford to buy them all. So I got 20th Century Ghosts from the library. But I liked it so much that I went out and bought it.

Based only on this collection of short stories, I'd say that, like your Dad, you're a fine writer. Very similar in some ways, very different in others. One similarity, in my opinion anyway, is that your stories that have nothing supernatural in them are your best. I'm thinking in particular of "The Widow's Breakfast." After reading it I thought "that's the best short story I've read in years."

I'm looking forward to reading Heart Shaped Box and any new books you write.

Charles
Hi Joe,
Got the ARC for HORNS. Finished in 2 days. Wonderful, but why do you always have to make feel so sad?
Just got the advanced read of HORNS today and I can't wait to read it....
Hi Joe, have just read your superb Heart Shaped Box and have to let you know how much I loved it. Many thanks for the terrifyingly great read, I can't wait to get my mitts on your next book which I have just pre-ordered.
Hey! I didn't know LT cuts super-long words short with '...'!

Hum.....
I'm enjoying the hell out of the Locke & Key series so far. It feels weird reading your comic series--as I only just started reading and taking comics seriously--before Heart-Shaped Box, a book I've been wanting to pick up and read for a couple years now, and gawddamn I'm even more excited to read it now.

If the quality of dem comics is any indication, you, sir, guy, are a much stronger writer than your old pah.

You know, to sound like a snobby prick!

(Although actually calling the town Lovecraft is a little in-yr-face, a little over-the-top-as-in-like-enough-to-suspend-my-belief-in-these-characters-and-in-this-world-sort-of-over-the-top cheesy.)

Wait, are you still even updating this page?
Sincerely Mr. Penguin, you are entitled to your opinion, but the only conclusion I can attain here is that I think you must have read the book upside down.
Sincerely, 'Heart-Shaped Box' is the worst book I've read.
Joe,

Heart Shaped Box is one of my favorite books. Hurry up and write another!
The other children's book issue that makes me sad is that Diana Wynne Jones' Chrestomanci Chronicles (which influenced the Potter books and which I prefer) are only available in the U.S. in a young adult format, 2 novels per mass market book--intimidating to the younger kids who might otherwise really enjoy them. Stupid American publishers.
I love John Bellairs' stuff. I work in the children's section at a bookstore and used to recommend his books all the time. Alas, he's always sort of marginally in print, and I don't think we carry anything of his at all anymore. It makes me sad, because he's such a good introduction for kids to gothic horror.
Hey, noticed that you had "the house with a clock in it's walls". I vaguely remember the saturday afternoon movie made from it, and being scared of the "hand of glory". Anyway, it was a good book also. :D
I just finished Heart-Shaped Box today.

I just came here to thank you for filling a solid chunk of my off-hours at work for the past three days with an entertaining story.

Keep up the good work and I'll keep reading.
Hi Joe,

Ever since I found LT a few years ago, I can't help but notice the coincidences that keep occurring. I have had "Heart-Shaped Box" for a month or two and decided to pick it up a few days ago. Of course, I am zipping through it and hate to be interrupted while reading it. I was on another LTer's page and noticed your name in her friends list and clicked. As I read your page I saw that you were reading "The American Wife" which I obtained in audiobook from the library...today! Before I got on the computer! That's a coincidence. I always have an audiobook going because I hate to be in the truck without some stimulation and I have probably listened to some things I might never have physically read that way. Coincidentally, I saw "20th Century Ghosts" on the shelf, in audiobook, and grabbed that also. I see on here that it received high praise. I write also, and my genre of choice is horror. I'm not too much about blood and guts, but lean more toward the psychological side of being scared to death. I'm really enjoying "Box" because Jude is in his head so much of the time, and who is to say that is not where the most frightening ghosts find the most vulnerable part of us? Right now I am working on a story involving a ghost from the past making contact with a modern-day girl, and I think the setting is very unique. I hope to glean some inspiration from your short stories. I hope to hear from you, as I don't know if you have been on here much lately, but I will check out some of your sites. Incidentally, I have recently read Neil Gaiman's "The Graveyard Book' and "Coraline" the graphic novel, which was one of my first experiences with that. He's wonderful and I so enjoyed all the characters in "The Graveyard Book." Have you seen the movie "Coraline"? Of course the novel was much darker, but I enjoyed the movie, too. Well, it's fantastic to be able to communicate with you,if only to say how much I am enjoying your books. Thank you and keep up the good work! Mary Beth
Noticed you liked She's Come Undone, and I was wondering if you'd be interested in reviewing my new novel and posting your comments here as well as a few other book-related sites. Thought you might like my book since it's also about a disturbed young girl's downward spiral and a bit dark. I could e-mail you the novel in an e-book format if you'd like (I'm out of physical copies at the moment). Let me know if you're interested. Here's a link to a summary in case you're interested:

I just saw the thread for Stephen King books and thought this would be a great follow up. His son Joe Hill is also a writer, in the last year I've read two books of his (i'm not sure if there are more.) I'm curious to know Omaha Hi lo if any of you have read these as well and what you think. I'm a huge fan of his dad but I have to say, the son really got to me with a few of his short stories. The creep factor is unbelievable. I haven't read anything like his stories in recent years and look forward to reading more of his work. The novel Heart Shaped Box was okay, predictable but still a decent read. What really got me was the short story collection called 20th Century Ghosts.
Hi Joe

I notice you own the Red Mars Trilogy, how did you find it??

TGG
Hey Joe-
Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed LOCKE & KEY and very much looking forward to the continuation. The story was engrossing, the characters were 3 Dimensional and the graphics bold and gripping. A step above most in the genre.
Keep up the great work!
P.S. Just recently finished "20th Century"-Loved it. Short stories have never been my thing, but these were excellent. Beautiful in fact.
Thanks again!
Thanks for your wonderful stories, Joe. My father-in-law gave me Box a couple of years ago and said "Here, you need to read this" and he was extremely right. Soon after, I picked up 20th Century. They are the most unique, beautiful stories I have read in years. "Pop Art" was especially touching. My short story collections on the desert island? Yours and Ted Chiang's. That's all I'd need. Thanks again... truly.

~Tim
Are you going to Dragon Con this year?
Thank you for commenting on my LT. I very much liked the Heart Shaped Box when I read it in manuscript form a year? couple of years? ago at a time when I was still doing preview readings for a local publisher.
Hi Joe,

I was almost in tears. My husband and I have been slowly collecting and reading them over the past few years so the finality left a pang.

Speaking of rides, I had been reading Heart Shaped Box this Summer, (had put it away when we moved in April and found it when I unpacked my office), and was on the same road to Florida,(Siesta Key), in June at the same time Jude and Georgia were.....it was a very surreal experience!

I look forward to many more years of enjoying your work and thank you for the friendship.

All the best,
Dorian
