About meI teach sociology and international studies at Butler University. I'm split between medicine and the social sciences--I started out with a chemistry degree and went to medical school to study neurobiology. Suddenly I find myself in one of the most anti-biology of fields, sociology, which I love. My interest now seems to be on the construction of identity/identities. This can apply to global issues like nationalisms, interethnic conflict and the "global citizen", or local issues like the construction of "black", "gay", "republican" identities, etc.

I would like to add in the neurobiology component to my interest in identity construction. Emotions and cognitions obviously play a role in constructing one's identity. We know a lot about the brain, so how do we link this biological knowledge into what we know as sociologists and psychologists. Perhaps bringing into dialogue disparate disciplines, such as the neurobiology/psychology of emotions and the sociology of emotions, or the sociology of identity construction and the neurobiology/psychology of personality and decision-making.

ER--thanks for the book tip about Obama--i'll check it out! :)
meredith's book is a nice history of mugabe's rise to power, at least it seemed so for a beginner like me. i'm a complete novice to african and zimbabwe's history. it was a great introduction. if you know anything about mugabe, or recent zimbabwe's history, it might be redundant for you. it seemed like a brief overview to me, but that's one thing i liked about it--it was a fairly quick read, but a nice overview.
i'm not familiar with dinner with mugabe. i doubt i'd read another mugabe book, though i'd definitely be interested in a broader history/analysis of zimbabwe.
jtownsley, I see you have the Mugabe: Power, Plunder and the Struggle for Zimbabwe book. I have it on hold at a bookstore some 30 miles from here and noticed you gave it a 4 star rating, so I'm thinking that means you think it might be worth the drive and purchase? Also, by chance have you heard anything about the new book "Dinner with Mugabe"? I'm thinking of ordering it since I can't find it anywhere within driving distance. One last thing, after I read your profile "About Me," I'm wondering if you'd like Barack Obama's "Dreams from My Father" (I thought it was great), since it's an "identity" book, gets into global issues and local issues, and very well-written. Thanks, ER
