About meHi!! I'm an aspiring federal librarian and would like to share my thoughts on literature, librarianship, and squirrels. I am an artist and LOVE to take discarded books and turn them into journals, gift tags, and bookmarks. I enjoy being a mom and love to take my girls on day trips around the beautiful Pacific NW--someday I hope to take them around the world! I have an MLS from Emporia State University with a concentration on international issues and youth services. I am a BIG FAN of non-fiction, it's my primary reason to cross the threshold of my beloved Sellwood library. Cookbooks, art, travel, and history are perennial favs. Hey! Thanks for reading!

About my libraryI love to learn!! I collect books that teach me how to do stuff--like cooking, how to make excellent art with paper, or the history of different cultures--their food, their art, their clothing--I like to imagine what life is like in different lands.
I'm also a youth librarian AND a mom, so I collect lots of children's and YA literature. I am on a "classics" kick and have been reading all of the books I probably should have read as a kid...

Reading Journal will reflect the following reading:

* 1 Classic from either of the two bibliographic lists titled Classics and New Classics
* 2 Children’s Novels from the bibliographic genre bibliographies: historical fiction, contemporary realistic, fantasy or science fiction (graphic novel is optional) This is in addition to the Lit Circle and Partner Book
* 25 Picture books
* 5 Wordless, ABC or Counting Books
* 1 Myth
* 5 Folktales
* 5 Information Books from the bibliographic lists of Orbis Pictus Awards to Star Information Book Authors)
* 1 Poetry Collection
* 2 Beginning/Easy Readers (from Easy Reader Bibliography)
* 2 Early Chapter Books (from Early Chapter/Beverly Clearly Bibliography)

Keep track of these outside book readings in a Reading Journal. The point of the journal is to keep track or your readings and develop a regular, habitual practice of evaluating and responding to children's literature. Hopefully you will begin to visualize the literature rich classroom as crucial. Your comments should reflect connections you made with the literature.

Every entry must have the bibliographic information of Title, Author, Illustrator (if it applies), Publisher and Date. Each entry will have:

* short summary
* genre
* personal response/ reflection
* theme, concept or classroom use or connection. You may include particularly strong literary or visual elements found in work.

There will be three assignments that are longer that will involve more detail with picture books & folklore/mythology. There will be an extended Information Book Assignment.

Any reading you do for an assignment counts for your journal requirements. However, do list the title/author of any book read for an assignment in your journal. For example,
Patron, Susan Higher Power of Lucky – Lit Circle Book

This journal is to provide a core list of favorite books to introduce and share with students, friends, etc. Start reading immediately and keep this simple running record of readings. I will call for the journal to be submitted at the end of the term. There is an online catalog you man use called 'librarything'If you submit electronically, this is not a problem. Some examples of Journal Entries are at end I will discuss its use in Lesson Week One. (40 % of grade)
