About me I live in San Francisco and grew up in the Washington DC area. Lawyer, lover of baseball (go A's). Every time I hear of someone meeting their end while mountain climbing, running a marathon, racing a car, skydiving or sailing across an ocean, I pat myself on the back for choosing reading a good book as my favorite entertainment.

About my library I love to read Anthony Trollope, Wallace Stegner, Simone de Beauvoir, Jane Austen, Simon Schama, Agatha Christie, Sue Grafton, Truman Capote, Proust, Mavis Gallant, Ivan Bunin, William Trevor, Anne Fadiman, Dashielle Hammet, listening to Teaching Company CDs and many more. I like to read about places that I have visited, or plan to visit; so my library has lots of books on Alaska, China, Mexico, Ireland, Italy and Europe in general.

I had a very nice holiday, thanks. I hope yours was at least the same. My SecretSanta did a mighty fine job -- "On the blue shore of silence" by Pablo Neruda, paintings by Mary Heebner. I hope you find the Maugham enjoyable. He had to endure quite a snubbing by the critics & his peers (for the most part). But he had a tremendous readership -- very popular. I notice you have Jeffrey Meyers' biography in your library. So you probably know all about Willie. I've always liked his tales. I keep a little list of his top ten (according to me). Perhaps you could do the same and we could compare some day.

Have a happy new year and enjoy San Francisco! (Also, "No Country." I'd be interested to hear what you think of it.)

Thanks for stopping by my site and giving me your thoughts on Jane Austen Book Club. I share your opinion of the book. This may sound terrible, but as I was reading it I just wasn't connecting with it and I wondered if it was because I was male. I was curious to see if female friends found something in it that was eluding me. But none of my female friends have read it, so thanks for giving me your thoughts.

Hello I notice that your Copy of THe Letters of Edith Wharton are Atributed to C. S. Lewis rather than the R. E. B. Lewis.Presumambly due to this same error occuring on Amazon. could you amend your Record so that It has the right name in the author field? Thanks

Hi -- I look forward to seeing your library as you add more books. I just finished Trollope's "Kept in the Dark," one of his shorter books, and would recommend it -- it only carries one plot thread along instead of the usual 3 or 4, so it's not as dense as his others. One of my favorite books is The Secret History by Donna Tartt. But I highly recommended to my sister and she didn't like it (didn't even finish it). Of Zola Therese Raquin is the one that sticks with me. I'd like to read more of his (wouldn't we all -- not enough time!) -- have you read Nana or L'Assomoir? I haven't read either of those. Thanks for writing.

I love your library! You and I share quite a few works and I haven't yet finished cataloging all mine yet. I am particiuarly fond as Trollope. I just finished Is He Popenjoy? and an now reading Orley Farm. I also love Zola, which I see you have a lot of. Any books you would care to recommend?
