However, Oceanside and Carlsbad are contiguous. In Carlsbad there's a shopping area called The Forum with a Borders, about two blocks away in Encinitas is (my favorite) B&N. Also, 1/2 mile away is the Quail Botanical Gardens, which is very nice. Also, in "the village" in old Carlsbad there are several used bookstores. I can recommend Farenheit 451 (spelling intentional) which has an excellent selection of books, though the prices are not cheap.
Of course, both cities have beaches to visit (Carlsbad has two--with great walking paths above).
