About meI'm a PhD candidate and sociologist at the University of Auckland. I'm also a gay man living with HIV, as well as being a lover of books, travel and culture in general.I've lived in Australia, the USA, and spent 8 years living in Turkey, which I consider my second home.
I travel a lot, love the Med and the Middle East, but am based here far away in New Zealand.
About my libraryCataloging my books made me see the patterns in here I hadn't noticed before. My youthful obsession with the Beats, I had no idea I had so much poetry. I have a definite thing for 20th C British intellectual and social life. And lots of gay stuff sitting in there too.Quite a few classics, and two books that no-one else has,a fact which I rather like.

I added the Terry Balanger book, because I saw it in your collection and thought it sounded like my sort of thing. It is now on my wishlist.
In regards to the writing up of the Ph.D. I have yet to find anybody (anybody sane that is!) who enjoys the writing up bit but you have just got to hang on in there and do it. Trust me I'm a Doctor...

I wrote my M.A. thesis about F.Edward Hulme, which is why I have Familiar Wild Flowers and one or two of his other works when I can find (and afford!) them. The books are lovely, both for the beautiful plates and for his comments about his life that can be found dotted throughout the pages. I really enjoyed the research but the thesis itself was relatively painful in that it had to be 10,000 words only.
My escape from Academia was due to a number of fortunate occurrences. Firstly, I met John (now my husband) and he came up with the idea of starting a business (and actually doing it), something as a teacher I would never have thought of in a thousand years. The real epiphany came when I decided to attend a demonstration of free-hand embroidery being given to the BA Fashion students by the artist Naseem Darbey - it was this or the huge pile of dissertations to be graded... She was brilliant and inspired me so much that I went home that evening and gave free-hand machine embroidery a go. I immediately loved it. Our weekend craft business took a change of direction (we had been making and designing soft furnishings)and went from strength to strength. So much so that I first went down to a 0.5 lectureship and then after another semester took the plunge and left! There was a lot of shaking heads at the School of Art where I taught and comments about how I would 'regret it'. However, it has now been four years and life just keeps getting better.
Sorry about the length of this reply - you can see why writing 'only' 10,000 words was such hardship for me! I see that you are working on your Ph.D. what is your subject/title? and where are you in the long distance marathon that is this degree?
Best wishes
Ruth
