About meVisual artist, practicing illustrator, publications designer and design consultant. Philippines.

Attracted to bookstores, bookshelves, book sales, book trades, book launches, old books, sellers of old books, hand-me-down books, unusual books, usual books, first editions, used books, books with ethos, hand-made books.

Addicted to the smell of printing ink and paper, printing ink on paper. Has documented the process of local smythe-sewn bound books, and salutes all printing press workers. Also dedicating this page in memory of Boy, one of the best manual strippers, and MB, who mastered smythe and hard binding.

Remembers those who give her books or CDs than expensive perfumes, jewelry or the most expensive cellphone (which actually is rare). [added]: Very special thanks to MJB, Irosa, Isabel T., Carlo C., and AMA for adding to my collection.

Enamoured with technology since learning to overcome and handle it to my advantage; also, believes that everything is possible with technology, especially after the "millenium bug" turned out to be a dud at the time when it was supposed to have brought down the global network.

Anyway, if you stumble upon this initial entry, come back again because it may change; still getting to know more about the site.

Finally, the photo you see is of one of my books. The mug is a gift bought from the shop of the Art Institute of Chicago. It's black, with the signatures and insignia of some of the famous modern artists of the West, in white.

Anyway, 41 books initially catalogued for starters, in between illustrating and doing roughs, or about 4 hours' worth of searching and cataloguing. I think this will be a weekly project instead, so, just check it out.

About my libraryMy library consists of books from my mother's collection, purchases by me when I started earning my keep, and gifts from friends and family. My mother complains that I spend more on books (and music) than on clothes or other things.

I hope to one day purchase the old card catalog cabinets of the UP Main library for my own, and have my own sanctuary with walls of shelves lined with books and other reads from floor to ceiling. Right now, though, our books can be found in all available corners, on surfaces and table tops in our house. Another complaint of hers.

Let's see, there are many Filipino books and authors in the list but with very little detail. So, I hope to be able to contribute in expanding the list of books by Filipinos on LibraryThing. That, for me, is a better goal, rather than just showing what books I have.

Hi there,
Glad you found the cover useful. Yes, I did, as part of my intention in signing up with LT is to make Filipino literature known. I happen to have the time last year to do this. Let me know if there are titles from your catalogue that need covers and I'll do my best to scan, upload and share. Cheers! - K Villa

hey, karissa,
how did you like that E.P. Patanne book in your picture?
mary

Hello, Mary,
To say I like it is an understatement. The book informs the reader in very clear and understandable narrative Philippine Pre-history towards the coming of the Spaniards different from other history books. His approach is a mix of anthropological, ethnographic and narrative manner, bereft of technical jargon. Thanks for your comment. :) -

Where do you get your wonderful rare filipinianas? :) They're so great!

Some my sister and I grew up with (my mother's books), some are gifts by authors, others from second-hand bookstores and book sales of publishers, notably the UP Press and New Day Publishers, an activity I used to do more frequently back in college and pretty much when I had more time to scour for books. Thank you for your comment! :) - K Villa
