Hi Larykirk. I saw your message in the talk section. As the message wasn't not linked to any group or topic, it's hard for anyone to reply directly to it there. And I didn't want you to think no-one wanted to help.

Here's hopefully some help:
Tags: they're whatever YOU want to write that jogs your memory about each book. Separate each one by a comma. Nothing is pre-set as that would make your selections lean towards what everyone else has chosen to tag, thus removing the individualism of free-form tags. As an example, I sometimes check other people's tags and choose some 'perfect phrases' I wish I'd thought of, but like to choose my first set myself, un-influenced by others.

Subjects: If you choose to ADD BOOK using one of the libraries and not amazon, full Marc & library subject info will come through with your added book. They're non-editable as they're, well, the library subjects assigned to that book.
To see subjects - have a play with your A B C D E display options. If you click on the (edit) link, you'll be taken to all the display options for your catalog. Subjects is one of the drop down boxes you can choose to display in your catalog. I tend to put my favourite columns in A, then vary the others for the occassional data check, such as subjects or IBSN number.
And on that note, if you display the subjects column - you'll see some are blue and some are green. Blue means they were imported with YOUR book by you. Green means that they're subjects that other holders of that work imported, but may not definitely be with your ibsn.

Hope that helps! Cheers and welcome, ryn
