About meHi. I'm a mother, professor, writer, and lover of books. I grew up in Seattle and Raleigh, and now live in Lexington, VA. My first novel, The Widow's Season, was published on June 2, and I've got a memoir with HarperCollins called Love in a Time of Homeschooling that will be published in April.

About my librarySince I teach literature and writing at Washington and Lee University, I own a lot of the classics. Jane Austen is a big favorite, as are modern poets like Yeats and Elizabeth Bishop. Contemporary writers that I admire include Marilynne Robinson, Barbara Kingsolver, and A. S. Byatt.

"Listen to the Exhortation of the Dawn!
Look to this Day!
For it is Life, the very Life of Life.
In its brief course lie all the
Verities and Realities of your Existence.
The Bliss of Growth,
The Glory of Action,
The Splendor of Beauty;
For Yesterday is but a Dream,
And To-morrow is only a Vision;
But To-day well lived makes
Every Yesterday a Dream of Happiness,
And every Tomorrow a Vision of Hope.
Look well therefore to this Day!
Such is the Salutation of the Dawn!"
