About meI grew up in villages and bush communities in Arctic Alaska and Southeast Alaska. My academic training includes ecology, world literature, anthropology and Far Eastern Studies. I have had all kinds of jobs besides award-winning novelist; to name a few: agricultural laborer in USA, Europe and the Middle East, bus-girl and dishwasher in Japan, ESL teacher in Asia and USA, art model, artist, cannery worker, landscaper, high school teacher, construction worker, editor and film extra.
