About meI am a 72 year-old retired librarian. My library degree is from UT-Austin, and I spent almost all of my career in a special libraries.

I have maintained my own library computer catalog for some time, but there is much not entered. I am going to switch the whole business to The Library Thing.

I mostly read non-fiction (except Harry Potter). One of my great loves is cookbooks, and others are photography and dogs. Just to give you an idea of how eclectic my reading habits are, right now I am reading some Kant, dog stuff, cookbooks as always, a couple of books about Beaumont TX (my hometown), the pilgrimage to Campostella, etc.

I do not take particularly good care of my books (I read eating, in the bathtub, in the car, etc.), but I do keep them a long, long time. And I take very good care of borrowed books.

About my libraryI guess I have about 2000 (not very many) books with cookbooks being the largest part, and Texas cookbooks being the largest part of that. Very few of these books are fiction. After I read a work of fiction, I am almost certain I shall never read it again (with a few exceptions) so I give it away or sell it. Non-fiction works are another story. However, space is a consideration, and I am getting rid of some books (to make room for more!)

My husband has a huge library, but it's mostly put away in boxes (he got tired of having all those bookshelves), so what I have cataloged is only a part of the books we share.

You and I both have copies of When Dinnerbells Ring - a cookbook from Talladega, AL. I just uploaded a picture of the cover. I have a lot of cookbooks, too. Can never resist picking one up!

Regards,
Laura
Lou, Kitchen Witch is the best thing I've seen recently. I'll have to write about them to share with my readers. New Orleans tap water! I think I may just have to order some for my next batch of gumbo. Thank you so much for the link - and the story.

Oh, Lou! A 1ST edition Edna Lewis Cookbook! What a treasure, especially now. I'm so glad to have "found" you.
Lou, I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. My Chow passed away very suddenly a few years ago due to a mass that caused an intestinal rupture. I think there might be a couple more pictures of him on my website at dreambichons.com. I had him cremated as well and his urn sits on my bookshelves beside the urn for his "Iffy", a Bichon he grew up with. The two breeds really complimented one another and the two of them made great companions for me when I moved from WI to NY.

I'm living in an apt right now and can't have dogs, but am looking forward to a time when I can have dogs again. (Aquarium fish don't give the same type of unconditional love.)

I know what you mean about those Arctic/spitz breeds and their independent nature. They're just looking for an adventure!
Yes, Lou, that is a photo of a Chow Chow and some Bichon Frise puppies on my profile. The Chow's named "Pu" and he was a really special dog. I see from your other postings that you are a librarian.

I was a library assistant for a mid-size public libary in Wisconsin in my past life (currently working in accounting in New York... it's a long story). I really miss cataloging and the surprises contained within incoming new book orders. I often think about getting back into that line of work.

Thanks for the Wanderers Between Two Worlds recommendation. It looks very interesting, and I will definitely check it out! Sorry my response is so late--I've been in Kingsbury for the last two months researching my book, and haven't had regular web access.
Hi again Lou! Sorry I have not gotten back to you sooner--we have gotten unexpectedly busy this week. My title is "Head, Periodical Services" which translates into management of all serial publications (online and print) and databases, supervision of a service desk for serials that is in use all hours the library is open, and bibliographic liaison for the sciences. Of course, since we are a small library, everyone does other things too, like Reference hours, bibliographic instruction, etc.

Hope to meet you at homecoming! And yes I know Laura H-O. She does all kinds of rescue work here in Georgetown and works closely with the Williamson County Animal shelter. I read your profile and noticed the you came from Beaumont--well funny thing, me too. My mother was also born in Beaumont in 1924. She was Sybil Pondrom, but it looks like she is 10 years older than you so I don't know if you would have ever run into her.

Keep in touch! Amy
Hi Lou, Thanks for your note. I also am a librarian, graduated from library school at UT, and I manage a department in the library at Southwestern University. I also live here in Georgetown. I am still inputting my books to Librarything, mostly they are botany, natural sciences, Texas, history (particularly WWII) and murder mysteries. So far I have been really impressed with this system! I really like seeing how my library matches to other people's holdings. I see that you have a lot of books on Spain--my daughter is married to a Spaniard and lives in Madrid, so I get to visit there often and love it!
