About meThe Maine Humanities Council is a private nonprofit organization, Maine’s affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. It promotes strong communities and informed citizens by providing Mainers with opportunities to explore the power and pleasure of ideas.

Since 1975, the Maine Humanities Council has used literature, history, philosophy and the arts to provide opportunities for people to come together in conversation that crosses social, economic and cultural barriers. We continue to use the humanities as a tool for social change and to provide cultural enrichment opportunities through programs and grants for Mainers of all ages and abilities.

About my libraryBorn to Read

Born to Read is the Maine Humanities Council’s early literacy program, established in 1997 to ensure that Maine’s youngest children, ages 0-5, are read aloud to daily and begin school excited about books and ready to learn. Born to Read has brought an ongoing read-aloud experience to over 20,000 Maine children through trainings and workshops for child care providers that provide literature-based curriculum collections to explore issues and emotions that shape a child’s development and a volunteer reader program offering weekly read-aloud visits and books for children in homes, child care programs, and preschools.

Literature & Medicine

Created by the Maine Humanities Council, Literature & Medicine: Humanities at the Heart of Health Care® is a national award-winning, hospital-based, scholar-led humanities reading and discussion program for health care professionals that benefits both them and their patients.
