My favorite Churchill is MAD FOREST, and I also love FAR AWAY. I hope your CLOUD NINE went well - it's an amazing, funny piece.
Just wondering how your work on 'Cloud 9' went? I directed it last year as an A level practical exam piece. My other favourite one of hers is 'Vinegar Tom'.
Haven,t had a chance to read or see much lately. I've been catching up on my fiction. One book I really liked as an overview/history of British drama was Christopher Innes's 'Modern British Drama 1890-1990'. It covers all the main figures and groups them, roughly, into schools.
Due to my Anglo/Irish background my play collection skews towards the Brits & Irish. Albee is an exception (I do have and have read 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf by the way) I read most of what I can find (I have the Goat but haven't read it yet). This is by way of saying that I'm a bit light on the classic Americans particularly Miller and Williams so, no, I haven't read them. At the moment I'm trying to catch up on O'Neill. I did read 'The Price' recently for an audition and though it wonderful, it spoke to me more than any of his others. I am dying to see 'Suddenly Last Summer' though, I hear the much underappreciated Carla Gugino is marvellous.
So my reccomendations are also a bit skewed. I am a big fan of Pinter ('Betrayal' is a good one to start with), and Conor McPherson (you might like 'Shining City') also I think Caryl Churchill is the best woman playwright (...I'm trying to think of a timeperiod, I'm not sure there has been a better). The standard picks for Churchill are 'Top Girls' and 'Cloud 9' but my personal favorite is 'Light Shining in Buckinghamshire'.
