We lived there on and off for 20 years. I was working, but I took Japanese the whole time, and never really became fluent. But I'm happy I studied it -- I don't think you can understand the culture without knowing something of the language. When we were finally leaving (2002), my Japanese sensei, choosing his words carefully, said I was his "longest" student.
Wasn't the Kuniyoshi wonderful? I raced to get my review in before all the raves were used up. Certainly paid off the LT lifetime membership, all in one go.

I see you have the "struggling gaijin learn Japanese" set of books. Did you live over there?
Thanks for the books you chose for me for the Secret Santa! I'm really enjoying 'The Eyre Affair' and I wouldn't have picked it up otherwise. :)
I'll post a review once I've read the stories, I'm finally racing through books again. :)
I just followed your LJ link, we're 0-1 degrees of separation on there, it's kinda scary how well the matching algorithm worked for SantaThing! :)
Hi there!

I got my SantaThing package a couple of days ago and managed to hold off on opening it until today - thanks so much for your selections! I've heard about "Mind the Gap" and am eager to dive into it. I haven't read anything by Connie Willis yet, but the short story collection looks very interesting.
thanks again!
Here's a word game you might enjoy.
