Chilies, Cacti & Cocks is one of the few in which the paperback edition is better than the first edition. Apparently, Turner added a few more essay's after it's original publication. Plus, the jacket for the first does not even compare to the paperback edition -great image. It's amazing how books are like tracks in a forest. One of the essays in CCC highlights Will James, who I then discovered for the first time. Then had to get a old Scribner & Son's copy of Lonesome Cowboy (autobiographical) off of ebay.

Here is where I would rather be this morning, sipping coffee and browsing the shelves: (Bozeman, MT) http://www.bozeman.k12.mt.us/web/lbabcoc...
Kate,

Here's a recommendation for you: This one really good! Bill Kittredge wrote the introduction:
Of Chiles, Cacti and Fighting Cocks: Notes on the American West
by Frederick Turner (collected essays)

Kate,

Ironic you brought up Doig and Harrision. I think they were the last two I have seen recently on book tour at the Denver Tattered Cover. Also, Doug and Andrea Peacock were here recently. Have you read Grizzly Years? Very few people know grizzly bears better than self-taught, Doug Peacock.

I remember when I went to see Harrison, I could not decide which novel to have him sign. (other than Returning To Earth) Unfortunately, I only took RTE and my first edition of Legends of The Fall. There were some in the group that brought up 5-6 different books for signatures. I really regret not taking Shape of The Journey.

RTE is very good. A little depressing but it is Harrison at his best. He just seems to get better with age. I guess he is quickly working on a few more projects. (maybe anticipating his mortality)

Got to get to Portland someday. I have seen a lot of Washington/Cascades/National Parks and even Whistler, BC but never dropped down into Oregon. Someday.
