Hi Beth, Looks like we share some reading tastes. I'm new to LT, but have been an avid reader all my life (I'm 65). I read more memoirs than fiction these days, since I began writing my own a few years ago. I've published four books so far and am still writing. I'll be looking at your library occasionaly. Keep reading. - TimBazzett, RatholeBooks.com
Hi,

Was wondering if you'd be interested in reviewing my new novel and posting your comments here as well as a few other book-related sites. Saw you liked Paris Trout, and I thought you might like my novel since it's also southern and a bit dark. I could e-mail you the novel in an e-book format if you'd like. Let me know if you're interested. Here's a link to a summary in case you're interested:

Thanks,

terrific library. I like our overlap.
Hi there- you sent me your copy of The Enchantress of Florence way back at the start of July, and I just read it over the holidays. I really enjoyed it, and have since passed it onto someone I met in Thailand =) Thanks so much! I reviewed it on my blog as well, if you're interested in seeing it. It is at:

And if you'd like to discuss it (if you remember it, that is), then I'd definitely be up for that, too!

Thanks again,
Aarti

Hey, thank you very much. I'm in no rush, I've lots of books to read in the mean time. LOTS! lol
Am I too late to mooch Infidel? If it's gone don't worry, it is on my BM wishlist so hopefully it will turn up eventually. Was is good? worth the wait?
Thank you a lot for your offer! It's very nice of you :)

If you'll decide that I'm silent too long - just ask me how it's going and then - if I would still not be able to mooch it - feel free for giving it away.
Understandable. But at this moment I don't have enough points for mooching 2 books, so feel free to give it to other person. Greetings!
Thanks Beth!
I've been hearing great things about Monique and the Mango Rains and would love to read it. I have a hardback copy of Guernica or a paperback of Queen of the Road if you are interested in either.

I would love to trade you something for Monique & the Mango Rains...anything you might be interested in? Let me know....

As promised, here's my review for [Ex Mex: From Migrants to Immigrants]: JorgeG. Castaneda, a foreign minister for Mexico during the Bush administration, illuminates the many and complex issues confronting the U.S./Mexico immigration situation. The book is very readable, though at times a bit heavy on statistics. Castaneda does a good job of presenting the problem and then discussing the reasons for it (from both sides) and possible solutions (again for both sides)--some which have been tried and some proposed. He gives the political background and climate as well. He was, I thought, very kind to President Bush and complimentary to Condolezza Rice and Colin Powell. He's supportive of President Vicente Foxes position, but always saw the other side and explained why the U.S. or Mexico acted as they did. I'd recommend this book to anyone striving to understand the U.S./Mexican immigration issues. (Rating 4)
If you're willing to part with Things Fall Apart or My Traitor's Heart, either one would be lovely. Otherwise, postage would be just great.
Just let me know your address and what specific books you'd like, and I'll be happy to send them your way:)

Thanks
~Mona
Sounds good, I'll let you know when I get it back.
Sure, Keep in touch with me:) Happy reading Tracy
Where the Dodgers play. Dodger Stadium. I lived in the SF Valley too although on the edges - Sunland and Tujunga. And, on the other side, Canoga Park.

Lucky you to have season tickets.
Hi Beth:

Thought I'd keep the clutter out of alcottacre's thread. Did you live in the LA area? We lived in Hawthorne. Then my ruined my life (well, not really) and moved to Diamond Bar in 1967.

Go Dodgers! Don't you just love Chavez Ravine?
Wow, I sure do have some recommendations for you.

Growing Up Latino is a collection of short stories about young Mexican Americans by various authors. You might start here, and if any of the stories grab you, most of them are from a longer work from that author that you could read.

...and the earth did not devour him by Tomas Rivera is a fascinating short book about the immigrant experience from many different perspectives.

The Effects of Knut Hamsun on a Fresno Boy by Gary Soto is an excellent collection of biographical essays. Also check out Soto's poetry if you're into that.

Upside Down by Eduardo Galeano is a crazy nonfiction book that sort of reads like fiction, or maybe a joke book. It is more about life in Latin America than immigrants to the United States. You might also consider Galeano's "Memory of Fire" trilogy for more about Latin American history.

Down These Mean Streets by Piri Thomas is about a young Puerto Rican man and touches on the Chicano and African-American experience.

Most of these books are in my library if you'd like more information on them. Thanks for asking!!
My favorite of Karen Armstrong's books is The Great Transformation. It was interesting, and I had a much better understanding of how both Islam and Christianity grew out of Judaism. I really enjoyed it more than any of her other books. I notice, you are on BookMooch as well. I have found several interesting books there.
