About megraduate student in the humanities, focusing on new media studies, poststructuralism(s), and psychoanalysis

About my libraryA lot of critical theory, continental philosophy, media theory/history; some good Japanese manga; a ton of literature I haven't read, purchased at used bookstores (if I see a good price on a used novel I've heard good things about, my wallet opens automatically); and a pinch of fantasy and science fiction.

Books marked "10read" are the next 10 books I want to read, books that I otherwise will have no excuse or responsibility to read. Hope I get to them this summer...

[re: a comment you left earlier...] What stuff are you reading on data mining practices, database marketing, and dataveillance? I'm looking for some recommendations. Thanks!
Hey there, thanks for the comment earlier. You also have good taste in mature manga and you're one of the few people I know that have "manga design". I see that you already have volume 1 of planetes, it gets really good at volume 3. Also some favorites of mine is Vagabond, Genshiken and Lament of the Lamb. =)
Hi! I saw your post in the Hypertext group and it seems we share some interests. You probably shouldn't talk to me though as I am one of those gloomy grad school dropouts (aptly described by Matt Groening as "the bitterest person in the world") who will go on long tirades about the injustices of humanities doctoral programs (although I, of course, wish you the best of luck and nothing but success and fulfillment from your studies). Just thought I would drop by and introduce myself. Cheers!
Still not done with all the scanning, but I was looking over your library and I noticed that you don't have Greg Elmer's book, _Profiling Machines_ in your catalog. Given that you're working on data mining and digital media, I think you might find it quite interesting. I'm working more with digital media than more typically 'visual' media as well and I've done some thinking about the data double. Although my work tends towards bio-politics. Anyway, just thought I'd send the title your way.
thanks for passing this along, yoshi. it's such a great distraction.
Hi Metatext, thanks for saying hello! You're high on my shared books list as well and the fact that we're in similar programs makes sense. Looking over your catalog, I see that we share even more - I'm not done entering my library yet... How do you like it in VS at Irvine?
Thanks for the note. We always heard about the University of Chicago as the place where St. John's was born. Books Compared is turning out to be very St. John's-y, so it is probably very U.Chigago-y, too.
Welcome to Books Compared. Hope you will join the discussion and maybe share a comparison review with us. It would be great to learn what you think about two or more of your "10read" books in comparison, as you progress with your summer reading list!
