You've got some pretty solid taste in authors, brother.

I'm pretty much over the tomato thread, but there are some studies that have indicate that "incompetent" people may be incompetent simply because they believe otherwise. Basic form of the study is that they ask people to rate how well they've done on a test. Those who do poorly consistently overrate their performance, with the possible interpretation being that since they believe they've done well, they see no need to work to improve. (Which I'm not sure is the only possible interpretation.)

I'll see if I can dig up some links for you.

Though I doubt it will do any good, as rrp's already indicated that he wants to believe regardless of truth.
