GroupsNew York Review Books, What Are You Reading Now?
About meI'm a retired teacher (reading, English, American history) who lives alone in a two-bookroom apartment (the bed is tucked away in a corner between the poetry anthologies and the 1959 edition of Encyclopedia Britannica).
I suppose you'd call me a recluse. I'm slightly agoraphobic, though my friends insist it's a selective kind of agoraphobia -- for instance, it vanishes completely when I feel the need to visit a favorite bookshop.
I read and read and read and sometimes try my hand at writing (which quickly sends me scurrying back to the work of the true writers). I'm not very knowledgeable about computers so it may be awhile before I can take full advantage of your lovely website.
I look nothing like Emily Dickinson (though we may have the same hairdresser) but I've loved her since I memorized "If I can stop one heart from breaking . . . " in second grade, so I hope she won't mind if I use her picture.
About my libraryThere is no great plan for my library -- it just seems to grow. Books lead me to other books, authors to other authors. I think of my books as old friends -- we've been through so much together.
Novels and short story collections make up the largest section of my library. Other interests: art, biography/memoir, children's literature, music, architecture, theology, photography, poetry, film, stage, history and geography.

Thanks for the post. I have several of Carpenter's books. I find the stories very tell-able, especially for children. I wish my library was as diverse as yours but I seem to gravitate towards folktales & fairy tales more than anything else. Bookstores are some of my favorite haunts also. When I perform in a new city I always seek out the best bookstores and when I go back to a place I've been before the bookstores I visited are like safe havens.
Take care,
Dan
