Thanks for the comment about the Goudge books. My favorites are The Dean's Watch and City of Bells. I lived for a time outside the walls of Canterbury Cathedral,and both of these books make me nostalgic! Which are your favorites? Shw wrote so beautifully.

Thanks for your comment. My collection is rather odd for a Quaker, but I got interested in ecclesiology and modern church history when I was a respectable Anglican and training to be a Reader (don't worry - I long since sent my admission certificate back). I'm fascinated by the way Establishment in England was regarded until very recently as a done deal but now, it seems, has begun slowly to unravel. Notwithstanding that I'm a ranting sectarian, I'm firmly of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" school of ecclesiology; and I still think that the Church of England, the Church of Scotland and the Church in Wales have important roles to fulfil in their respective communities, not least as the places of last resort for the lost, the lonely and the bereaved.

(This is my third try - things keep going wrong.)

It looks like you have a beautiful library, yourself. What sparks your interest about Qing China?

Churches the Victorians forgot is a wonderful book. It is also a salutary read for anyone who wants to 'improve' the interior of a church to meet current liturgical fashion! I think that this is a splendid site.

It's a beautifully peaceful book. I was lucky enough to catch a talk by Thomas Pakenham at the Edinburgh Book Festival a few years ago. He had some lovely tales of the writing and travelling involved in creating the book. If you like this then I'd recommend Light of the Earth. It's a photography book of the best of the last 25 years of wildlife photography. Each photo has an accompanying paragraph giving the background the the image. It's quite stunning.

Vol. 5 of Donne's sermons seems impossible to find (although I've only been looking for about 1 year). It's odd, as several of the other volumes seem to pop up more frequently. Very occasionally you see complete sets available, but it's too late for me to consider buying one of those just for the sake of volume 5. Too bad--these are really good books.
