About meI'm a 22-year-old undergrad at Purdue University, but require a semester-long "victory lap" in order to graduate. Many moons ago I studied psychology, but I haven't had the slightest interest in it since I switched to history, my first love! :) Indiana has been my lifelong home, but this will be changing when I leave for grad school in a few months. In the meantime, I work as a barista. I love reading, researching (yes, really!,) coffee, playing pool (I'm terrible,) cooking (much less terrible), Law & Order, cupcakes, dancing, and Tetris.
I'll read anything that sounds good, but generally stay well away from chick lit, YA, and science fiction. Some particular areas of interest are Indian lit, magical realism, historical fiction, family sagas, and history of all kinds. (No need to restrict myself to any region or time period just yet, there will be plenty of time for that in grad school I imagine.) Some favorite books, in no order:
The Jungle, Upton Sinclair; Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, Haruki Murakami; The Secret History, Donna Tartt; The Shining, Stephen King; Buddenbrooks, Thomas Mann; I, Claudius, Robert Graves; Battle Royale, Koushun Takami; The Sound and the Fury, William Faulkner.
About my libraryI only add books that I actually own, and since I am a poor student (what else is new) my library is fairly small. To counter this, I visit the library once every few weeks, request almost nothing but books for birthdays and Christmas, and hit up library sales for cheapies. If I must read something immediately, I'll buy it, and then kick myself for not spending it on something necessary like food or rent. Oh, the things we do to keep ourselves in books...
My brother and I grew up having books read to us often, but aside from infatuations with LotR, the Harry Potter series, and trashy true crime, I didn't read much in my teen years. I re-discovered my repressed love of books in college, so I have a lot of time to make up for! LT is practically a godsend, because I have no one in my family or circle of friends with whom to discuss books. I'm still a tiny bit intimidated by the long-term LTers--if I come off a bit distant or cold, it's just shyness! I'm really very friendly.
