About meI love to snowshoe in winter and hike, run and garden in summer. Of course, I love to read in any season. I am the mother of five and grandmother of one. I have a particular fondness for children's literature and though my children are grown, I continue to read it. I also enjoy many Canadian authors and stories that give me a glimps into other cultures.

About my libraryMost of the books I read are borrowed from my local library. I live in a small town without a bookstore, so I love it when I do get the opportunity to visit and browse one. I usually leave with at least one small purchase, so I do have a collection growing at home.

Thank you for the recommendation. I hadn't seen "Blindness" before but will add it to my list. I received a gift card for Christmas for a bookstore and can't wait to stock up.
Hello
We share quite a few books on our lists and you have some I have not had time to add (Running with Scissors) but I wanted to recommend a book to share or send to your granddaughter, "Mud Pies and Other Recipes" by Marjorie Winslow. It is indeed a recipe book for outside adventure and is set up like a cookbook for little girls to share "treats" with their dolls. It can be ordered from Amazon and is so charming I re-purchased it for my library after losing (or giving away?) my own copy. A good book for you to read if you have read "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho is his "A Witch of Portobello". I am currently reading it right now and it is a story told through recounts through the main character herself and others in her life. Another good read is "The Historian" by Elizabeth Kostova; a tale of the legend of Dracula. If there are any you would care to recommend I would love to check them out. That is one of the great things about this site!
If you liked A Fine Balance, you should read Such a Long Journey....not as sad as A Fine Balance and very readable. Speaking of children' s books, after I retired from teaching, I babysit a year old child for four months and although it was more work than I remembered (my own son is 21), I so enjoyed reading to this little boy. All my favorite baby books...Goodnight Moon, The Runaway Bunny, and so on. He loved to be read to as well. I have to say that is the think I miss most from not teaching....I used to love to read to my students....and they loved it as well. Charlotte's Web (which always needed Kleenex at the end), Where the Red Fern Grows, Anne of Green Gables, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I was fortunate to have taught different grades over the years so have read many many wonderful books to children. Many of them are grown up now and when I bump into them, they always mention me reading. Like the Chinese proverb says.....a book is a tiny garden you can put in your pocket......
Thanks for adding me.....I also have a lot of children's books....Corduroy was one of my son's favorites when he was little. We also loved all of Jan Brett's....aren't they wonderful! I am a retired teacher and have to say that I miss reading to my children (grade five) the most of anything since I retired. (Actually, I sub once in a while just to get the opportunity to do that again!!!) Didn't you love A Fine Balance...so heartbreaking but beautifully written. My favorite Canadian book in No Great Mischief by Alistair MacLeod....it is the most beautiful book I've ever read about family, love and loyalty...it is set in the Scottish settled island of Cape Breton off the coast of Nova Scotia. I highly recommend it.
Hi Michelle,

I am adopted Newfie. I just love your province and visit whenever I can. I live in New Brunswick on the Fundy Coast. This is a great place.

But nobody can beat Newfoundlanders for hospitality and talent, hands down. The country is fantastic. We did the signal hill hike last time we were there.

Thanks for your wishes about my book! It's very exciting

Hi...thanks for adding me to your interesting libraries. I see you have King Leary...I just bought it. I loved his book Whale Music which was a thinly disguised story of Brian Wilson's life (Beach Boys). Hope I enjoy King Leary as much! Have you read any other Giles Blunt? I love all his books!!!
