Heheh... I'm sure you're miles more legitimately Oxonian than I! For one thing, I'm just one of those odd Americans who are in the MCR for a few years for a bit of a taste of Oxford and a second BA. There were Americans there who actually had the proper attitude and credentials and were going for MLitt and DPhils and such. I, on the other hand, was busy RPGing and reading comic books! No wonder I barely crawled through the exams and ended up going into commercial art. Ah, well. I had a wonderful time.
As for enthusing about the lovely trash... That's difficult even when not surrounded by scientists. Hence memberships in forums such as this, I suppose!
I was there long, long ago--pretty much amongst the founders of the RPG-soc (it was the D&D-soc, then!). I attended a sort of reunion dinner for the RPG-soc on a return visit to Oxford way back in '97.
Well, I hope you enjoy what you do get around to reading. I'm actually not all that discriminating, you know, so don't rely on me! Although I do think the Berg books were pretty good. I'm not sure what else I'd recommend from last year aside from those and a few others... Reading is such an individual thing that recommending anything is problematic.

Thanks for your comment - sorry for the late reply, I've only just seen it (I tend to come back to LibraryThing every few months, add another dozen books, and then give up in despair at the thought of cataloguing them all!). It's lovely to hear from you and I shall enjoy looking at your library. Would be good to get back in touch. LJ seems a thousand years ago...

Carol Berg... She's written several trilogies and some stand-alones. I've read most of them and some I've enjoyed better than others. Most have interesting hooks and concepts, others are fairly predictable fantasies but written well enough. I think some of her concepts and beginnings have not been enough to carry through to a satisfying completion at times, however. One series I just totally got bored with and couldn't complete (although I could finish the books I had picked up already).
I rated the latest book of hers Flesh and Spirit fairly high because I really liked how it started out and the characters seemed very intriguing. The second book in the series is just out in HC and I've reserved it from the Library, but haven't got it yet. I'll have to see if she can carry through the promise of the first! I really WANT to like her books. We'll see, I guess.
You might want to try some of her books, though. None are awful, but as with all book, they have to appeal personally, and it's difficult to be sure unless you try...
... There's a group called Almack's??? I'll have to go have a look!
Are you at Oxford? An Oxonian group... I'll have to go look at that, as well! 'Hope you don't mind me snooping about your profile!
