I'm delighted, Trish! You're on the list.
Hi Trish,

Thank you for your kind comments about my cat pictures. Not surprisingly, I have about a thousand more. I guess I'll stop taking their pictures when they stop being so cute and handsome and funny which, of course, will be never.

Kind regards,

Jan
Hello! Yes thanks, I've just managed to find most of Oriel Malet's work on Amazon or Abebooks; the interest started off with my getting 'Marjory Fleming' by Persephone.
Tell me; does your library ever feel like it's taking over your house? My whole living room is just bookshelves everywhere, and still growing!
Lovely to hear from you, king regards,
Sally
Well, that was quick! I hope you enjoy it. :)
Dear Patricia,
I just had to email you to say that I have (at last) read The Ghost at the Wedding, which you sent me just before we left NZ - and I loved it. I can't believe it's only got 11 readers on here. Thank you so much!! We are about to move back to NZ from Switzerland and I've noticed my reading heading back to NZ and Australia too.
Hope all is well with you.
Cushla
Thanks for your comment. I did find your library interesting. I am almost finished reading that book and will then review it on the site. I will then move onto biographies I have of Jenny Wyse-Power and Mary MacSwiney.
Hi Patricia,

Thanks for your message. I should join that group - I just don't know if I would be able to contribute to it as much as i'd like to. I go through phases with books! I should stop by though.

I actually came across your collection through a Ronan Bennett book i just read - Overthrown by Strangers. I think you were one of the very others who have read it. I loved The Catastrophist immensely, but also Havoc in it's third year was such a prescient read. He is so subtle.

All the best,
Hannah
Thank you for the recommendation! Anything about Turgenev and Pauline Viardot piques my interest.
Ooops, I mean Virago!
I'm a fanatic about English country churches (and London parish churches). My husband and I are interested in the architecture and I am particularly interested in the memorial sculpture. As a WWI buff he collects WWl memorials. The little booklets I have listed are the guides, usually written by a rector in the 1930's and are chock full of interesting details and local customs and folklore. I did doctoral work in medieval history with an emphasis on church history, so I guess this is just a sideline interest.

(My favorite little church is the medieval chapel in Deerhurst near Teweksbury and there is a tiny church in Lapworth near Birmingham that has a double free-standing belfrey...I could go on and on!)

We are in the middle of a blizzard here. 24 inches of snow by morning with 50 mile an hour winds!

Elaine

PS. I have about the same amount of church guides to list. I only listed parish church m-z. Have a-l to go.
Trish, you are so kind! Thank you so much. And even though Christmas is very much present in the shopping malls already, at the moment I'm focused on getting past Thanksgiving which is this coming Thursday!

Laura
That's funny! And I'm thinking, "Oh man! I'm about 2 hours from the coast. If my boat comes in, there's no way I'll be able to meet it on time."
I do love this place. Nobody else in my whole world understands!
Thanks Trish! The nice thing about Google spreadsheets is that they track revision history. If something goes horribly wrong, we can revert to a previous version. That said, I don't want you to venture into uncomfortable territory and am always happy to help!
Trish, I've added the row and entered the book details ... I think. Please verify!
Also, in future feel free to insert new rows. Right-click on the row number at the far left (e.g., #551 The Soul of Kindness is row 563), and a menu should pop up that allows you to "Insert 1 above" or "Insert 1 below".

Thank you very much for your assistance in keeping this up-to-date!
Laura
Trish, I agree with your suggestion. I inserted a new line in the spreadsheet with #544, but left title, author, etc. blank -- would prefer you fill this in with the appropriate comments.

Thanks!
Laura
Hi Patricia,

I have a question about a book we share - Wonderful Sphinx - the biography of Ada Leverson.
Hardcover edition published by Virago in 1993.

On page xiii of my edition, there is a list of illustrations but alas, NO illustrations!!! How can that be!!
What a big whoops on behalf of the author AND virago!!

When you get a chance, can you take a look at your edition? I feel like I'm going crazy!!

Thanks much!!
Cate

P.S. I've sent a note to Christina (christiguc) as well. Funny that the three of us are the only
LT members who have the book!!
some interesting parallels to my library,
Hi Patricia,

No. 551 is the new Barbara Pym, Less than Angels - came out last month.

No. 552 is the new collection of Janet Frame's stories which is out next month - I got an advance copy and will be posting about it on Saturday! Virago are very kind in keeping me up to date.

Verity
Done, Trish! And thank you for the compliment on my review!
Hi Patricia
I'm intrigued that you're added Dictionary of Irish Place Names. Do tell why.

Hi Patricia
Loved Ravel by Jean Echenoz and wrote a little review. Hope you are well.

I totally agree. Their VMC line seems to be faltering. I am second to none in my admiration of Daphne Du Maurier, but publishing so many of her books in a row meant that other, less well known, authors, fell by the wayside. And their current lists do not inspire me. I remember the first time I read a VMC. It was Talbot's Gentlewoman, a little gem which I believe would have disappeared into the ether if not for VMC. And then there is Not So Quiet and all of the Taylors. I could go on and on about how this publishing house opened my eyes to the truly great writers from the 19th to the mid 20th century I had never read.

Today the editors seem to be stressing young writers and letting the VMC line fade. Well, other publishers are stepping in to fill the void. I'm just grateful that the VMC list is long enough to last me, especially if I reread some particular favorites.

Elaine
I know that it is really odd how a few nonfiction books seem to be VMC's.
Off hand, I can think of A Very Great Profession, Suppressed Cry, and Beyond These Walls. Maybe even 84, Charing Cross Road.

That's the problem with lists and rules. There always are exceptions!

Thanks for the information.

PS to previous message...

I also added the cover and the description of the book's contents. Although the description is posted under "descriptions" the counter indicates no description is posted. Can this be fixed/

I just added Omnibus by Kathleen Dayus to my library. I have not a clue how to add it to Christina's VMC Series Order list of to The Virago Collection Tracker. Can you do it from my listing?

Elaine (Liz1564)
Thanks ror your message of Feb. 19.

The particular titles that interested me in your collection were:
Flaiano's [Tempo di Uccidere/Time to Kill] (also translated as
[The Short Cut]; and the two Norther Ireland titles: Elliot's
[The Catholics of Ulster] and O'Doherty's [Empty Pulpits. . .].
But your History category in general was interesting. I have almost no
books on an Australian topic, even though my wife is something
of a Pacific specialist -- more in Polynesia than in Oceania in
general. You have quite a number of books on Aboriginal subjects,
judging just from the first word of the title --and that would not take
in all of them, whereas my wife has only two.

I was put onto Flaiano's novel by PH.D. candidate of my own
generation who was neither Italian nor a religionist, but he did say
that it was a book about FAITH, (as opposed to just HOPE).
I was interested in Elliott's Ulster--Catholics title, and in
O'Doherty'sIreland--Religion title, because my maternal grandparents
were Ulster Catholics.

Hi Patricia,

Shame about Fabcat....but at least you had a good time watching him race...hope he finds a good home for retirement. Yeah I have seen a quite a few Fasnet Rocks going round and he seems to throw some pretty good ones. Keep me updated on how you go with your next lot of ponies :)

Cheers

Jess
Hey congrates on the third very exciting :)
Hey,
Of course follow the canberra races being a local, such a shame am working this arvo otherwise i would have come out to watch it race...will try to duck next door to the tab and see how it goes...Fingers crossed for you and Fabcat (great name). You are so lucky to be in a syndicate...a dream of mine one day.
Yeah I have been looking for another horse to inspire me like Apache did but nothing yet...am going to go onto australian studbook latter to see if any of his half/full brothers or sisters are still running.
Hi,
It sure is a picture of the great Apache Cat also my favourite racehorse :)So sad that he is no longer running. I am so glad that someone recognised the picture as him.
Your library led me to the Persephone Collection. :) Can't thank you enough!! Going to make my first purchases this evening :)
Hi;
Mark and I have been discussing the possibility of another group read in November and want your input. We have narrowed it down to two books at this point. "The People of the Book" by Geraldine Brooks and "The Thirteenth Tale" by Diane Setterfield. So chat it up with friends or us and let us know if you are up for it and what you think. Probably the same plan as with "Pillars of the Earth" which seemed to work out perfectly for almost all of us.
Think it over and give one of us a shout.
hugs and looking forward to hearing from you,
belva
Noticed you liked Tim Gautreaux, and I was wondering if you'd be interested in reviewing my new novel and posting your comments here as well as a few other book-related sites. Thought you might like my book since it's similar to Gautreaux's work (Tim Gautreaux actually directed my master's thesis). I could e-mail you the novel in an e-book format if you'd like (I'm out of physical copies at the moment). Let me know if you're interested. Here's a link to a summary in case you're interested:

Do you know, Patricia, with retirement EVERY day is summer vacation! We are in summer heat and humidity for sure with one 100+ degree day last week and now hovering in the lower to mid 90's. Fine weather for sitting quietly and reading! Hope your winter isn't too raw.
Peggy

And, oh my, I see a Muriel Spark that I didn't know about. LATER, Lizzie, LATER!
