About meI'm 27 and a librarian in Oxford. I have a blog at http://cardigangirlverity.blogspot.com

About my libraryI have been collecting books for 25 years, although I've had a few minor clearouts. I put my books on librarything back in 2007, and the collection has grown. Predominantly fiction, including quite a lot of children's books, (both from when I was young, and a couple of years ago when I set out to collect the Chalet School series), but also history (did a history degree) and some other random books reflecting some of my interests (although, interestingly, I have nothing about brass bands!).
Unfortunately, my library isn't a great guide to what I read: I read huge numbers of books (last year I read 300 non college related books), and rely on my public library to provide these, as I can't afford to keep up with myself. (Plus, I regularly run out of bookshelves!)

Dear Verity,

Just got your note because I am in venice. Will light a candle for your dad in San Marco. Keep me posted.

Elaine
I just read your 'Dear Santa' letter and noticed that you like books from GGBP so I had to have a look at your library! I also have lots of their publications. I've added you to My Interesting Libraries - which really means 'Has lots of books in Common', of course!

Kerry
Verity, here's another to start your morning from Willard Espy (from memory).

A Mr. kissed his Mrs.
He covered her with Krs.
He Kr., Kr., Kr.
Until he raised a Blr.
The Blr. killed his Mrs.
Oh how he Mr. Krs.!
He Mr., Mr., Mr.
Until he Kr. Sr.!

Feel better!
Peggy
Verity, here's another note just so that you'll have something else to do. I wish I knew something entertaining to pass along ---- O.K. Here's Willard Espy's activity for today in An Almanac of Words at Play.
'To make sense of this exercise in punctuation, insert commas (or, as I prefer, semi-colons) to taste: "... brimful of ale / I saw a Venice glass;" etc.

I saw a peacock with a fiery tail
I saw a blazing comet drop down hail
I saw a cloud wrapped with ivy round
I saw an oak creep on along the ground
I saw a pismire swallow up a whale
I saw the sea brimful of ale
I saw a Venice glass full fathom deep
I saw a well full of men's tears that weep
I saw read eyes all of a flaming fire
I saw a house bigger than the moon and higher
I saw the sun at twelve o'clock at night
I saw the man that saw this wondrous sight.

There. That's two minutes taken care of.
Hope you continue to feel not too awful!
Peggy
Add you to friends! A terrible oversight indeed!
Thank you for letting me be nosy about your house. I'm looking forward to seeing it develop!
Hi Verity,

Re your house blog, I would love to read it; please forward details. And enjoy doing it! Moving into this house after a succession of flats was the best thing we've ever done...
Verity,
I'd love to have a sticky - thanks.
Verity

I would also be keen to follow your house blog - I look forward to your ideas on how to accommodate your library:-))

Patricia
May I see your house blog please? - Helen xx
I too would love to follow your progress with your house blog!
Julie
I would love to see your house blog!

Elaine
Verity, I'd love to follow your blog!
Thanks,
Peggy
I'd love to see it Verity. Always love a snoop around other people's houses :)
I'm sure you will get around to reading it before I do, so I look forward to hearing your thoughts on it!
Hello,

I saw on your Virago Venture blog that you were wondering if there is a biography of Elizabeth von Arnim. I have one that I found in a charity shop; here is the link:
http://www.librarything.com/work/2842402/book/59814839
I'm sorry that I can't tell you anything about it as it is on my huge tbr pile, but I thought you might like to know of its existence at least!

(in case the link doesn't work, the book is by Leslie de Charms and is called Elizabeth of the German Garden.)

Hope this is of interest,
Claire
Dear Verityjdo, I have been contacting the 4 members, who I suspect made a typo in entering a work.
You added an Author as "Thewell" when I think you were thinking of "Thelwell". I would appreciate it if you could correct this "typo".

When this typo. is fixed we should be able to get rid of this non-existant chap and your works would be relinked to the greater world of "thelwell", a GOOD cartoonist and pensman. But hey I am biased :-)
Hi Verity,

Just to let you know I posted your book this morning.

Dee
Thanks Verity- I'll send it off next week. Happy new year!

Dee
Heya verity, nice to see you here and thanks for the friend request!
I see you may have been in the works ;) love the wagamama cookbook but I personally wasn't particularly taken with the Sophie dahl one, you?
Been tempted by the sally bee one though, hhmmmm.
Oh I see you've added 'One day event' ... one of my all time favourite books when I was a child! I really must root out that box of books in my parents' loft as I'm sure it is in there. Did you read Monica Edwards' books? Happy memories :-)
hi Verity

Thanks for the reply. I am interested to know that your No 551 is Barbara Pym's Less Than Angels. My copy which is from Blackwells is No 550. I also regularly email Virago about the numbered classics and thought that Janet Frame's stories might be the next numbered VMC which should be No 551. However, there is also a new edition of The Soul of Kindness by Elizabeth Taylor coming soon which may be allocated a new number.

The recent release of A Game of Hide and Seek by Talor was given a new VMC Number and there are now two copies of that title with different numbers in the series.

Have you purchased the new edition of Soul of Kindness? Does it have an updated number?

I am in Australia and buy my new release VMCs from Blackwells so that I am sure I am getting the "right" edition. Sometimes there are slight changes if books are printed here in Australia and I usually have to wait several months before they are released here.

Regards

Patricia
Hallo Verity
Congratulations on reaching halfway in reading the VMCs. I noticed on your blog that you refer to 552 VMCs - the Virago spreadsheet tracker has only recorded 550 VMCs.
Could you kindly advise the titles of the other two VMCs you have on your list, please?

Many thanks and best wishes for the second half of the reading marathon. Isn't the literature found among the VMCs outstanding!

Regards

Patricia
I became an uncle last year and I've already started collecting childrens books for when they're older. Do you have any ideas for must-haves?
Hi Verity,

I came across another book where the main character shares your name! The Voyage of Innocence by Elizabeth Edmondson. I'm nearly finished reading it. An okay book, I'll give it 3 stars.

Seasons reading to you!!
Cate
Hello Verity, Thanks for inviting me to be once of your LibraryThing connections. I've just been reading a review of "The Case for Books" by Robert Darnton, the director of the library at Harvard, that may be of interest to you:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2009/nov/15/case-for-books-robert-darnton
In it he speculates on the likely future of the book in the digital age. You'll be pleased to hear that he thinks the printed book does have a future.
Verity, Oh good. I am glad it arrived so quickly. I do hope you enjoy it. I still haven't tracked down the film adaptation yet. Maren
Hi Verity.
I share your fondness for children books (beside Viragos), and I have been trying to collect them though the years, especially old editions.
I have one of the Chalet Schools on my Amazon wish list, but did not get to order it yet. Any other suggestions? Thanks!

Paola :-))
I love your library! We share all the best books; and the ones we don't share, I want to borrow from you.
