Spot on review of the Reader! I hadn't seen the film, so obviously hadn't seen the film's commentary. Thinking of the story as one about Germany's relationship with Nazism does add an interesting note, but you are correct in that it never really succeeds. But I'm also glad you praised the chapter where he is hitchhiking. The whole book is almost worth that chapter.
