Hi Alessandro,

I haven't seen "livres d'artiste" before, but they look fascinating. I agree our interests are different, but that's why I enjoy this site so much. It's fascinating to see into other people's bookshelves :-)

Cheers, seabear
It's going to take me ages to organise my bookshelves and when I imported my books from Goodreads, I also lost about 300 or so books (mostly books without ISBN numbers, but what is really a pain is the fact that there is not way of figuring out, I think, which books I actually lost). But I am happy that most of my books did get imported although I will have to edit each review, add tags to most of my books etc. etc. A daunting task, sigh!
Chou, Alessandro

While Debs had many accomplishments - a prominent union leader, one of the founders of the Industrial Workers of World, one of the founders of the American Socialist Party, three time presidential candidate of the US Socialist party, etc - it is primarily his personal example of courage during his prosecution and imprisonment for his opposition to US involvement in WWI that led to my admiration. US Socialists were the only parliamentary socialist party to vote against war credits as agreed in the Second International. Deb's opposition to the war eventually led to his prosecution and imprisonment at the federal penitentiary in Atlanta. While in prison despite poor health Debs devoted himself to serving his fellow prisoners through working in the prison hospital, writing letters for them, and advising them. He was beloved by the other prisoners and admired by the prison staff including the warden. After the war ended, Debs was one of the few jailed war opponents not to be pardoned due to his prominence and the relentless hostility of Woodrow Wilson. As a result, the still imprisoned Debs was nominated again for the Presidency by the Socialists and supported by a coalition of other progressives as well as those hoping for the release of all objectors still imprisoned. In the 1920 election he received almost a million votes while still a federal prisoner. It was only with the assumption of the presidency by Harding that Debs was finally released. When he walked out of the Atlanta prison, his fellow prisoners lined the cell windows and gave him an extended ovation.

It was easier to believe in the benevolence of worker controlled state power in early 20th century than it was at its end. It is not his ideology that I admire so much as his personal example and allegiance with the weak and powerless.
Hi Nisgoland,
Based upon your personal experience, I vote for your "Rudel" too!

Thank you for your kind words. I am from South Africa (also Jewish) of Lithuanian descent. You may have noticed that this book was one of the 2012 winners and may be of great interest to you. The History of the Holocaust in Romania (Comprehensive History of the Holocaust) by Jean Ancel.

Cordiali saluti e felice anno nuovo!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!
Dear Alessandro,

I was thinking about you the other day, I had discovered that one of my favourite contemporary sculptors (Jason Arkles) has pretty much moved from NC to Florence, Italy. I'm kicking myself because I had always meant to buy one of his small pieces or a terracotta study and never got around to it, now he's in Italy. Do buy or collect art? Anyway, Happy Christmas, Hannukkah, Kwanzaa, Solstice or any holiday you celebrate.
Hello, Alessandro!

I'm sorry to find out you had to put up with the flu. I'm glad that you were already feeling better by the time you answered my message. I too end up staying at home for a month whenever I catch it.

What is the TBR category? The Corriere della Sera sounds like a wonderful publication. You are lucky to live in a country like Italy with such much history and culture all around you. I am myself subscribed to a magazine named Fine Books and Collections which is geared towards wealthy folks able to acquire rare books. I don't have the means but I can always dream. Actually I do own a valuable book printed in London in 1661, thanks to my friend the bookstore owner. She has some wonderful rare books on her shelves and she lets me pay her in installments, bless her heart.

I wish I were a member of a society like Cento Amici. It would be a dream come true. Nothing like that happens in Miami. But at least I have my two bookstore friends. We should call ourselves I Tre Amici Del Libro. But actually we call ourselves, as a little joke, Society of Nerdy Old Bibliophiles or S.N.O.B.S.

I have read and enjoyed Dickinson and Whitman, but I must confess I have never read Kerouac. I suspect that if he is too modern for you then he'd be too modern for me too. I have a tendency to go for the likes of Jane Austen and E.M.Forster for novels and Sylvia Plath for poetry.

I have been getting so many books lately that they are everywhere you turn in my house. My family think I am a crazy woman who collects books and cats. Like you I am being hounded by the thought that I have to put up some more shelves to get my precious new volumes off the floor. Oh well, you understand this very well, since you are a fellow bibliophile.

I hope you are in good health and buying many more wonderful books and attending Cento Amici.

All my best,
Marie
Tra l'altro riavvicinandosi assai all'originale.
Sono anch'io appassionato di questioni storiche, ma la mia attenzione è più sul Risorgimento (cioè sulle radici dei guai attuali) che sulle cose più vicine.
Cordiali saluti!
Dario De Jaco
