What can I say? I love books and am a closet academic at heart...Sounds geeky, but it's true. I've had collections before and ended up getting rid of them when moving. Now that I've got a house and some space to fill, I'm starting to amass a serious collection again. Books topics continue my interests from university days and/or areas I'm involved in now as a policy consultant for the Ontario government. All are issues I either have a personal or professional stake in. Since I've been a regular haunt at lots of bookstores across Toronto, the owners know me and sometimes set aside books that may be of interest. And since I notice you're from TO as well, a great place to score used books is at the Toronto Library's Central Reference site (Bloor/Yonge) where you can pick up fantastic finds for $1 each...PS: I also read fiction but tend to borrow those from the library; I save my purchases for non-fiction.
