Noticed some recent activity so thought I would pop over and pay you a virtual visit! Hope all is going well with your book selling. I am still reading madly and adding to my tbr which is HUGE but really I wouldnt have it any other way LOL I have just finished reading The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and believe the hype.....it is a page turner and such an entertaining and thrilling read. I am looking forward to the next two books that make up the trilogy. Are you finding time to read? I notice you havent changed your profile covers in a while.

If Shoalhaven beach views are outside the window then tres cool.
I've just been lurking around seeing who else has Voss. Have you read it?
I don't have it but just added it to my wishlist because there is a "Voss Journey" on this weekend in Canberra and sounds very interesting. I've decided to "get cultured" and read it one day.
Also, with Suite Francais I think your in for an interesting read. The contrast between the novel and the author's own life really makes you think.

Was wondering if you'd be interested in reviewing my new novel and posting your comments here as well as a few other book-related sites. Saw you liked Paris Trout, and thought you might like my novel since it's also southern and a bit dark (in the same vein as Paris Trout). I could e-mail you the novel in an e-book format if you'd like. Let me know if you're interested. Here's a link to a summary in case you're interested:

Thanks - it is really cold here, we are not used to it, and I know you are having a terrible time in the heat in Australia. My husband's sister lives near Sydney.
We are about an hour away from Leeds, so not too far away!
Your library is, of course, nearly 3 times as big as mine - where do you keep all of your books, or are they books you have read and don't keep anymore?

I listed The Apple separately and got several people saying they wanted it if you didn't take it. The Angel Network listings mean no one gets notices and the points still make it where they're supposed to go.

Finished Revolutionary Road over the weekend......still thinking about it , great read and looking forward to the film especially now Kate Winslet has won a Golden Globe for her role as April. Nice addition too of the Michel Faber. How is the book selling business going? Pick up any good books over the weekend?
I have been hitting Ebay pretty hard now that I can spend time looking re larger GB allowance!! Can be fatal though and I have found several books I have been wanting very cheap and now it is time to curb the adding books to the library and do more reading!

Revolutionary Road is excellent. Only three chapters in and I am hooked and one can only wonder why he isnt more widely read or known. I had never heard of this author until this book was mentioned on the ABC book program. The release of the film will no doubt change that and he will gain a wider readership and people looking for more of his work. Several titles available over at the Book Depository.
I am still enjoying the Wally Lamb and a major work in progress and nearly to the half way mark. So where are you listing all of your books? I might pop over and be tempted!!

A Fine Balance is a wonderful but an incredibly humbling story and possibly one of my all time favourites. I lent my copy to everyone I know and by the time it returned to me it was ready for the bin it was so well read!!
Good on you with the new book selling venture. Are you going to list on Ebay too? I have placed a couple of bids on three new books at Ebay and have won two already The Other by David Gutterson, Twilight in Venice by Steven Carroll for rock bottom prices with few competiting bids so happy with that.
I also have a copy of Revolutionary Road on order here as it is a Bookgroup read for February. I have been chatting to Susan Johnson about this novel and she believes he is one of the most under-rated writers in print.
I am currently dipping into The Devils Advocate by Morris West at the moment and I think the same can be said about this author. This is well written and a good story and one of those authors who has slipped under my radar. Have you read him? There are several novels available at BM and I have requested his last novel The Last Confession as I would like to read more of his work.
Very warm here today also but cooling off nicely now.

Still four stars makes this one worthwhile reading. I have just placed an order at Boomerang Books for both The Slap and The Time we have Taken to take advantage of the 20% off as I will be reading both for bookgroup early in the new year.
I havent read any Chandler and perhaps one I should add to my wishlist. There was a few raves about Fowles on one of my groups about The Collector and when I searched BM up you came with a copy =)
Sadly no books for Christmas although it wasnt for lack of hinting. All my family think I have enough books LOL They are probably right but I dont think I have enough books and at least I know if I never leave my house ever againI will not run out of reading.
I have just started reading the Wally Lamb and I feel it is going to consume every waking moment for the next few days. I enjoyed his previous novels and this one is shaping up to be a winner too.
How about this crazy weather, sweltering yesterday and now cool enough to put on a jumper again...crazy!!

Thanks for the links to those sites. The Book quiz was fun and I like the proverbs....all very true especially the one about housework LOL !
Just looking at your new books....Great Apes by Will Self, have you read this author before? I have 'How the Dead Live' by Self and must try him soon but I am wondering if I have a bit of a preoccupation with the 'dead' theme as it is featuring a lot in my book titles of late!
I was passing Angus and Robertson yesterday and picked up last years Booker Winner 'The Gathering' on a bargain table for $10. A bit sad though to find this relegated to the bargain bin already!!
So are there any books you are wishing for this Christmas? I only have two and leave lots of hints but generally books are not forthcoming for me as my family all think I have more than enough !!! I would like The Slap by Tsolskias and The Tall Man by Chloe Hooper. Even though the subject matter is very depressing I have read her essay about this case in The Monthly magazine and it was a very impressive piece of writing.

Good to see all your covers are there again. How are you going with the evil 'Engleby'? This is such a clever book and although not a lot happens it is the inner thoughts of a devious mind that draws you right in . The Mistry book ' A Fine Balance' is another one I really enjoyed too. You are on a good run at the moment and no doubt finding plenty of reading time. I would love to make the total of 50 books read but I think I will fall short as there is only 15 days till New year. Do you keep track of the number of books you read each year?

I had the same problem as you this morning however I needed to change a couple of my covers as I have finished reading my current book . Then when I added new bookcovers all is fine again. My covers were ok yesterday but two had disappeared today and I had not made any changes in that time ??? So further to Lyn's comments below I wonder if it is in fact the codes that are a problem.

I was surprised at how quickly that book got to you, in fact. And I see you got The Final Solution. I think that is a lovely little book! Our shared is coming along nicely these days.
As to your images - there is something wrong with the code, is all - check to make sure the inverted commas are there at the beginning and end of each bit, and the rest is correct - and the spacings (yes those spacings) are double where they should be, and single etc, etc.
If you are still having trouble - send me a copy (in rich text) and I will check it out for you!

It's good, actually, to have a little push toward a specific book as BookMooch (and my own greed) has filled my house with books I really, really want to read, but haven't yet got to. I'll let you know as soon as I finish it and then reserve it for you on BookMooch.
Now to brave the cold, cold weather to take the dogs out. Are you feeling smug, all warm in the summer sun?
posted by RidgewayGirl at 11:01 am (EST) on Dec 14, 2008
No I am not at all familiar with this author and from the review it may require some stamina. Largely plotless and with some colourful language!! Hmmm let me know what you think of it. I have checked my list of Booker winners and this awarded the prize in 1994. I have read most of the recent winners from 1997 but need to catch up with all the earlier ones going back to 1969. So it goes to say I have a lot of catching up to do.
Did you happen to read the SMH Spectrum liftout this weekend? There was an article featuring the woman who produces the Richard and Judy bookshow in the UK and she says that any book she chooses for a gold sticker endorsement is guaranteed to become a bestseller. She claims to despise "literary' books........but if she thinks putting her endorsement on a Donald Duck comic is going to make a bestseller she has to be deluded. What does this say about the British book buying public?? I dont think the same could be said for discerning Aussie readers like us LOL
The wind has been very wild here too? Last night was terrible and when I came out of my front door on my way to work this morning I was greeted by two spooked cows !

I have been listening to the Radio National Bookshow this week and my must have book of the moment is The Zookeepers Wife by Diane Akerman. Did you hear yesterdays program? If not you should podcast on your MP3 thingy. Such an interesting story about a couple you run an exotic zoo during the war under Nazi occupation who hide Jewish citizens (true story) Only in hardback here so too pricey but the Bookdepository has it so may buy this after the Christmas credit card bill is cleared LOL

Book Karma will level it all out in the end - and you are always looking out for books I want. Besides, you just got all those lovely points AND you have paid the points for this book already. Wow! Yes; look at all those points now! It is a very nice feeling to have accumulated a nice number, especially as I am now finding lots of books to get with mine! Postal costs are outrageous though - I am sending more and more by surface mail these days, and that still costs heaps. You have quite a few coming back to you too.
I must find some more books to put on, though I am hoping to wait for UNSW Book Fair next year. My 'angel' requests are keeping me busy enough at the moment. I did that as I have so few books to add to my inventory; though I am considering losing some books I would have kept before LT and BM!! Are you getting your books from garage sales? Your catalogue has grown immensely since I first saw it - have y9u got them all on now. Our shared has increased hugely too...
You did very well with your birthday books - I saw the other book about 'Animals'(can't remember the exact title) by Andrew Zuckerman he did last year, and I want that one! That looks beautiful too. I was amazed at how many books I knew of, that were mentioned on the ABC book show on Sunday night- including your birthday present!

The book I wanted from your list has gone - but I am considering another - looking at your cricketers' books. You have added some great books BTW. And you got great books for you birthday - another good thing about hitting certain ages :) - that Wisdom looks fantastic. I was pleased to hear Desmond Tutu's views on Zimbabwe yesterday - the man is true to his beliefs and ideology - rare today, and I admire him immensely - so I was pleased to see his words inspired in that book.
I had to have a lie-in this morning too - hope it keeps me going for the week now.

No hangover but I definitely ate too much with numerous trips to fill my plate with oysters and prawns.
I have mooched two books from you so you possibly dont want the cost of posting another? Thanks for the generous offer and if you want to send I will of course be most grateful. :)
I see you have recently added Breath to your library. I love his writing and this new one is great although I still think Dirt Music is my favourite of his novels. I wrote to him through his publisher a few years back and he responded with a 'hand written' postcard which was a thrill. Apparently he is reluctant to embrace the concept of email and prefers the old fashioned way of communication. Oh and I have just noticed the 'Wisdom' book. Is that the coffee table book featuring Judi Dench and others? Nice !! Was this one a birthday gift? And the Geraldine Brooks...I mooched one of hers last week 'Foreign Correspondence'.
Best go and finish reading the Guernsey book as I have 50 pages to go before I join the First Tuesday Bookclub panel and their thoughts this evening.

LOL! I just sent you a comment at the same time as you sent this one! I have to say, I loved The Book of Illusions!! So I was glad to help get you that - poor Colin. He had 30 requests in two days! I truly think newbies should only be allowed to put up 10 or so books to begin so they start off slow...so many of them cut and run, they get so overwhelmed!

There is a bug when adding books (well for me anyway) - if you edit the title it 'uncombines'. I posted it to Bug Collectors as it is also doing it for some people when they add reviews!!!
Colin has sent our books - talk about being inundated with mooches on his first day - so I will forward it on as sson as it arrives. I hope you didn't mind that; he asked when I sent him a note to try to help him out, after I saw how many requests he had gotten, and I was worried he would leave!!

I really dont know if these are valuable but I just like the thought of having a first edition in its original binding.
Well I am really struggling to force myself to pick up TGLAPPPS and I have so many I would rather be reading. This is sometimes the problem with a bookgroup read when you would to toss it aside for something else that is waiting on the pile.
We also had a little rain overnight but it is steamy hot here this afternoon and pleased to have a weekend off for a change. I have my work Christmas party tomorrow evening at a local restaurant and function centre and it is all you can eat seafood so looking forward to that.

Yes I thought this was a bit odd when it showed I was the only person with this book. The correct title is 'The Peoples Act of Love' and I added from the Bookmooch tab when you mark a book as received. So does this happen when you add books this way? Do you add books to Library Thing from Bookmooch? I know this is a feature you can turn on or off.
Anyway as I am a stickler for detail I have deleted and re- entered it so now it is all correct.
Good to hear you are enjoying Gideon Mack so far. I am always nervous when I recommend a book so highly and then the other person goes out of their way to get a copy ;)
I am reading The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society at the moment and it is all a bit 'twee' for my taste... but it is light and quite easy reading and with the *Womens Weekly Good Read* sticker it is a dead giveaway and I should have known better LOL The First Tuesday Bookclub is discussing this in the final hour long episode this Sunday and I cant wait to hear what Marieke Hardy thinks of this one.
I also picked up a bargain at my local op shop yesterday. I think it may be a first edition hardcover of Remembering Babylon by David Malouf for $2.
Happy Reading

We were doing some Christmas shopping so yes it was new bookstores this trip. I do usually visit Fyshwick in Canberra and a wonderful secondhand store called Canty's. I can spend hours there if the family are willing to drop me off and come back much, much later LOL I do agree there is something quite satisfying about a book bargain and the treasures you can find in second hand stores and as you frequently do at garage sales. Some of those larger stores are quite sterile with so many copies of the one book and the people that work in them usually know zilch about books.
Well I hope you get your birthday wish and The Slap is forthcoming. I will need to get my hands on this one too as it is on my bookgroup schedule for April. Have just been reading a good review for it in the Australian Book Review magazine.
Now you must get inspired and add some more covers to your profile. I shall be watching //\

I see you have been quite busy adding some new books to your library. The Kate Grenville is of interest as I like her writing. And is the Seth as large a tome as 'A Suitable Boy'? I have that one and the size is so daunting that I have yet to consider making a start. That would have to be a title to consider when asked what book you would take to a deserted island.
I spent the day in Canberra on Friday and visited a few book stores and came home with the new Wally Lamb and Portrait of a Lady by Henry James. The latter has a gorgeous cover and just couldnt resist.

No at work and missed it unfortunately. I will listen to it online if you think it was worthwhile.
Did you hear the program last week with Ian McEwan from the Sydney Opera House? You should go and find that one before they take it off, it was so interesting and hilariously funny about all the people who have wrote to him over the years about *errors* in his writing.
Mooched a little book by Arundhati Roy which arrived today called The Ordinary Persons Guide to Empire. This is a collection of speeches and essays primarily focusing on the period leading up to the attacks on Iraq. Also two books from the Book Depository which arrived in less than a week from ordering. I think I will be giving them plenty of my
Australian dollars in the future. I sometimes feel a little guilty not buying books here but they are just so expensive in comparison. I do support my small local independent bookseller so I am not all bad LOL

Well I would like to take credit for my pretty profile but alas it confounded me no end and Lyn has stepped in to help. There was a problem with the code spacing due to line breaks in the plain text email!! I was getting so frustrated and there were great gaps when I tried to do it myself.
Lyn has spent a good deal of today helping me and has offered her assistance until I get the hang of it all when I next change my covers.
I see you have been adding a few more books to your library. Wally Lamb is a favourite and both She's Come Undone and I know this much is true are great reads. I see he has a new novel that has been ten years in the writing so will it be worth the wait.....we shall see.

Please, please send by sea mail, or whatever they call it as I have enough to read in the meantime!
I'm glad you liked Case Histories. I've been pushing that book in a somewhat obnoxious way for some time. Also, Michael Dibdin, if you want something dark. Ask Lman, she'll tell you.

I was actually asking for someone in Australia to post a book to me in the States...
However, as a US Angel I'm always willing to help out with overseas mooches.
So I went ahead and mooched those 2 books for you.
Now we have to wait for me to get them, and once I have them I'll reserve them for you on Bookmooch.
Then you simply mooch them from me and I post them to Australia.
In the meantime, please find me on Bookmooch under "PaulinaK" and add me as your friend, this will make it easier for me to reserve the books for you.

Yes, I feel very lucky to have received such a wonderful assortment of books. Now if only I could afford to retire and read away my days......I wish ;)
Case Histories is a good read and like you I prefer to read in order. There is another book following on from One Good Turn recently released and I think it is 'When will there be good news' or something like that. Have you read 'Behind the Scenes at the Museum'? Will be interested to hear what you think of 'One Good Turn' as I have a copy of that one here....hiding....somewhere?? Oh so many books , so little time.

And I loved the book you are currently reading - it is one of my favourites for this year; one of my 5 stars. Hope you enjoy it as much. I went on a mad spree after reading that and grabbed all of her other books I could find. I now look forward to reading them. It is interesting the number of people who now mention how much they enjoyed Behind the Scenes at the Museum, and as it is her first, I have placed it into my reading queue.
Hope you, and family, are well,

I have been looking at the instructions for the code but I think a bit too complicated for me. I have worked out how to put a large cover photo of my current read on my profile page so I am happy with how it looks now.
I expect you had a good time on your break away and did you get some reading in between golf and liquid refreshments? LOL
Also wanted to say a big thankyou for the link to the Book Depository as I have been wanting a nursing text book and found it there for less than half the cost of what I would need to pay here in Australia. Their prices are so cheap and have also ordered The Zookeepers War by Steven Conte for bookgroup.
Best wishes

thanks for asking about the home situation and no doubt we are in for some difficult times ahead but then life is full of ups and downs.
Lucky you though with some time off and you have chosen three very good books. I tried to get some leave in the next few months but one of my work colleagues has broken her leg so that puts an end to any time off for me over the coming Christmas period.
I did notice we have both just read The Bookshop by Fitzgerald and it was quite an 'enchanting' little story. I had my copy mooched very fast from a lady in the USA which was great as it went as cheaper airmail and gives me a few needed points as I was getting low.
I have still to look at the code but life too hectic which has put me in a bit of a reading slump at the present and havent picked up a book for the past few days which is most disappointing. I really feel deprived if I dont have time to read each and every day.
I gave the Early Reviewers offer a go here at LT and I have a book on its way_ 'Rocket Man' by William Elliot which was a nice surprise although I have no idea what it is about.
Anyway enjoy playing golf and time around the bar and look forward to your thoughts on those books when you get back.

I'll see how I go with Storey, I've got a way to go yet with the Booker winners. I also plan to get all Impac Dublin winners and Orange Prize and Miles Franklin winners. I haven't been reading much lately as I'm trying to put my family tree together. So far no famous people have emerged, although it was interesting to discover that my great grandfather lived at the Greyhound Hotel in Stockton-On-Tees, England and I have a greyhound.

What a day, huh - with the garage sale on top of the fair?!! You will be cataloguing for days - at least, if it it was me it would be days!
Thank you so much for thinking of me and I have mooched the Banville - I cannot find his books anywhere(for a reasonable price) and most of his older ones are not even available new in many places. I have been looking for Kepler for ,what seems like, forever as I have the first and last of the trilogy. I may have to buy the omnibus, compendium, or whatever it is called from TBD at this rate. So I am very excited to get this one - I didn't see any of his at the fair - but I was getting book-blinded in the end.
You should be able to change the size of your image by changing the number in the code - that is all - in this bit:img style="height:160px;, as you can see mine is 160 (at the moment). I can never decide if I like it larger or smaller - the ones on our home page are probably 130 - 150. It should change when you put in a new number and save it - there has been a problem with saving things lately, I had to save my review edits twice, so maybe the new size did not take.
Now, I have a Dibdin to put on Bookmooch: Vendetta, because stupid, old, forgetful me already has a copy! *sigh* Do you want it? I will reserve it for you if you don't have it already - let me know before I post it.
Thank you so much again for the Banville - I have about 25 to put on here today, and then I will slowly add to BM. I would love to check out what else you have to mooch - I might find some more. Like you, I really need some more books. LOL!
Best,

I had a great time at the book fair - did you? I saw some Mankell I wanted to hide for you; I hope you got them! I picked up a lot of Jeffrey Deaver (someone on this site told me about him *grin*) and lots of books you wouldn't have wanted(phew)in Fantasy and SF. I just loved wandering through all those books! I haven't got the energy to catalogue them all just yet... and I got some for my BM inventory too.
Thanks so much for telling me about it - I am already primed for next year!
Currently reading is looking nice! *smiling* What size is that - must be close to 200 - yes?

Wow a book fair!! That sounds wonderful and thanks for your kind offer. As I have mentioned I would love to read some more James Robertson so you could keep him in mind for me =) I also have recently read 'Empire of the Sun' by JG Ballard and would like to read 'The Kindness of Women' which follows on from Empire.
LOL re No I dont want to join a bookclub_ I was passing a street stall and there was a large box of books for $1 each and couldnt go past this one for its title alone. It may be crap but I did manage to find a couple of other worthy titles amongst the box =) How is your current read? I have read the White Earth by McGahan which I enjoyed. I am presently reading The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga which for the Booker winner is a bit disappointing and finding it a struggle to pick it up.
Have a good weekend and happy book hunting!! Let us know what you find.

I quite enjoy a good crime novel and it can be a welcome distraction from more serious literary reading........recently thinking about Blood Meridian by McCarthy which is full of biblical references, archaic words and sentences that go on for half a page!!
I have been trying to finish Edgar Sawtelle but unfortunately not a lot of time for reading this weekend. There was an excellent review for this one in the weekend SMH and I see Oprah has picked this up for her bookclub pick.

Yes re bookgroups..... I sometimes despair at the number of books I *have* to read as opposed to those I would *like* to read that are languishing on my shelves. So tell me about these Dunning novels. They look as though they may be a crime series? I dip into crime every now and again and love Kathy Reichs and her Temperance Brennan novels. I have also been reading Ian Rankin's first Rebus novel at work in my lunch breaks as the chapters are short and easy to pick up and read in short bursts between coffee and a sandwich.
I still have around 60 more books to add to my library here and it is interesting to see who shares my taste in books and reading. I like the author connections too and I enjoy reading Susan Johnson's novels and she is a LibraryThing author and we have been exchanging comments.

Busy is right! I started doing this on Friday night and I still have another 165 books to enter into my library. I am a bit shocked as I was unaware as to just how many 'unread' books I have in my possession.
I have checked my journal and posted my review for The Sportswriter and The Secret Scripture if you are interested. I agree re The Book Thief and one of those very special reads. Have you read his other books? Well done on the Sara Nelson.
Thanks for the thumbs up for Infidel and The March and I will put them closer to the top of the pile. I am currently immmersed in Edgar Sawtelle and then next up is Napoleon's Double by Antoni Jach which is a bookgroup read. BTW Would you be interested in an online bookgroup through Yahoo Groups?

I have the weekend off and I do hope it rains cats and dogs as guilt free reading would be so nice. I hope to make a major dent in Edgar Sawtelle and I also want to list all of my tbr here on L_Thing which will probably add another few hundred titles.

Tell me more about the Book Depository?? I did a check of one bookstore today for the George Turner but no luck. I will keep a watch out for you.
Thanks...I did hear Kate Grenville today on RN. I love the Bookshow and listen when I can. I just wish I had a more generous broadband allowance as I wouldnt have to miss any programs. Kate Grenville is everywhere at the moment discussing this new novel. She was on the 7.30 report with Kerry O'Brien last week and she is featured in the Australian Book Review which arrived in the post today.
You must put Engleby close to the top of the pile as this is a brilliant book. I have started Edgar Sawtelle today having just finished The Secret Scripture by Sebastian Barry . A good story but I do have an issue about a plot element towards the end....otherwise worthy of its Booker shortlisting.
Cheers

I will be interested to hear what you think of Gideon Mack. I have tried to find some more of this author but sadly not easy to source at this stage. Another book I would like to recommend is Engleby by Sebastian Faulks. This is a brilliant book with a most unsettling and unlikeable main character but his observations of the world and those around him is very funny and insightful. It is quite a departure for Faulks where war themes are the norm but then he has just written a novel featuring James Bond.
I have just finished reading The Secret Scripture and looking forward to starting The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. It is quite a popular title here at LibraryThing and a lot of reviews with a rating of 5 stars.
Did you finish reading Under the Skin? That was a weird book.

Well, it was a 'friendly' smooch only! LOL! But a heartfelt 'book-friend' one...
I made myself stay away from the book fair in the end - I took a look at my TBR pile, thought about the parking, and went and read my book! Looking at your additions, it seems it was a good idea - I would not have been able to help myself! I want to read a William Trevor book soon - see, I have all these books I need to read - did you get those from the fair?
I loved The Book Thief!! It was my first 5-starred book I reviewed here. I wasn't sure I wanted to read it but I am so glad I did. Some books stay with you for a very long time, and this is one of those for me. I'm pleased you are enjoying it too. There were times, when reading that book, when I physically had to stop and tell myself to breathe!
I have just finished The Shadow of the Wind; a beautifully crafted work, at least the translation is! I have to let it digest a bit, so I have a bit of light fluff next on the agenda. And I see you have snagged a copy!! (I was checking out your inventory, to see what you had added.) That is so good - I got mine as a mooch too, which somehow makes it even better. (no idea why???) I do hope you enjoy it too - pressure! Then I am going to try my first Paul Auster... it is such a nice feeling to have so many good books lined up.
I'm looking out for the Dunning books for you,
Take care,
Lyn

Who is the author of the Miles Franklin you are looking for? I have two good secondhand sellers in my town and could have a look for you. I havent read Michael Chabon but always interested in discovering a new author so if you want to put a reserve on that book for me. I would be willing to give it a go =)
The Book Thief is one of my favourite books of last year and one I will happily keep on my bookshelf. I dont hang onto books unless they have that something special and this is one of those memorable reads. Another great book I would like to suggest you read is 'The Testament of Gideon Mack' by James Robertson. Have you read this? It was on the Booker list a few years back. Shortlisted I think. Great plot, characters, language and one of those books that made me realise why it is I love to read! My copy is currently doing the rounds of my workplace and everyone has enjoyed it too.
I keep a journal of all my books that I read with a short synopsis, what I thought of the book and a rating out of 10 so it is easy to contribute to blogs, post reviews at Librarything and with my online bookgroup we share our reading each month along with our scheduled discussion book.
Noticed you have just added two William Trevor novels. I loved the film My House in Umbria with the delightful Maggie Smith. I have read The Story of Lucy Gault a few years back. Dont remember much detail as it was pre journal days !
Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Oooooh! Thanks for the link - I have a very long weekend (Fri-Tues)this weekend, so I will (hopefully) be able to even get there! Didn't know about this at all, but I was actually thinking I should start checking out some book fairs in Sydney, as I am probably missing out on a lot of fun! That was after you sharing your last one with me...
Hmmm... the John Dunning books came to my notice from our new home page, when it was first introduced. I am madly writing reviews for all the books I read now (as you probably have noticed) so I happily added 'hot reviews' to my home page. One of the first I read was about Booked to Die, and it interested me: ANY book about books interests me, and it was a crime book too: a detective who owns a book store, loves books, collects rare books AND solves crime!!! Bliss! Such a good premise - I hope! So I checked out this author and then a friend managed to mooch two for me and the other one I snagged! And as they have only just arrived onto my shelves I have absolutely no idea what they are like; but I do hope they are as good as they sound. As I got all three as mooches it is even better - yes? The other point I noted was that this book has high rating scores - I was only going to get the first so I could try the series out; but you know how it is, don't look a gift-mooch in the mouth! :) I will let you know my thoughts, as I am thinking of reading the first book soon - bumping it up my TBR list.
Speaking of reading books about people who love books: my current read The Shadow of the Wind is just brilliant - so well-written and full of reverence for books! I strongly recommend this book - I think there were quite a few copies available to mooch too. Have you heard of it? I checked and I don't think it is in your catalogue - which doesn't mean you haven't read it.
I wanted to thank you for giving me such a great list of authors when you last wrote! I am slowly checking them out - and your comment will be left in place to help my memory. I am also interested in the Steig Larsson book - was that hard to find? (I peaked at your other comments, and saw he has died!) I have become very keen on new (to me, that is) European authors as they often have a different perspective and an insight into a different culture - if you get my gist here. I was just as interested in Henning Mankell's comments on Sweden as in the plot of his books.
I hope you find lots of lovely books - and have a nice lunch. And thank you again for the tip! I must try for Saturday to - otherwise the best books will be gone I think.

Just browsing other people's profiles I see you have rated one of my favourite authors - Stieg Larsson. It's great to see that he's appreciated all the way down there as well. Don't miss the other two books in the so-called Millenium trilogy! (Unfortunately, he passed away before they were even published, so the fourth novel he had started writing won't apper.) You also have another Swedish author in your library, Marianne Fredriksson, who wrote "Nightwanderer", which I like very much. Try it!

I am reading the Edgar Sawtelle for my f2f bookgroup next month and it has just arrived at my bookshop which I will pick up today. Also have Sebastian Barry's 'The Lost Scripture' so it will be difficult to decide on which one to read next. I have read A Fraction of the Whole and have The White Tiger and A Case of Exploding Mangoes on the tbr. Picked up both of these on Bookmooch in gr8 condition =) Cant wait for the winner announcement.
I will be interested to hear what you think of 'Under the Skin'. It is a difficult book to categorise and I would say_literary science fiction thriller sort of sums it up! If you want to read more from this author can I suggest 'The Crimson Petal and the White'. Quite a large tome but worthwhile. I also have another 'The Courage Consort' on my shelf unread as yet. I noticed we share Cormac McCarthy's 'All the Pretty Horses'. Have you read 'Blood Meridian'? I have just read for my online bookgroup and this is perhaps the most challenging book I have ever read.
I also noticed a reference to Black Books in the last post from Lyn. My son and I are currently watching the whole series on dvd courtesy of BigPond Movies. We love it LOL
Have a great day

Thank you for that great link! I have only quickly scanned through it, but it is now bookmarked for further perusal.
LOL! You are so lucky - I adore Black Books!! I have watched every repeat the ABC puts up happily! It is an all-time favourite; some of it is beyond brilliant. And, of course, it helps it is set in a book store. That was a very good present; I'm surprised you hadn't seen it, but I don't watch all that much TV so I can understand. I hate ads - so the ABC showing the series was another bonus.
It will be huge, I think, if an Australian wins the Booker this year - remember D.B.C. Pierre? I was a bit more interested in a couple on the long list actually - but new authors are always good to try.
Do you read a lot of Jeffery Deaver? I have seen his books in my used stores but I am totally ignorant about him. It seems like a series - thus the interest! :)
Hope you are all well,
Lyn

Thanks so much for those two lovely mooches, and for the introduction to Jonathan Safran Foer. Can you believe it: I was in my local used book store and they had just gotten a really crappy copy of his second book ( water damaged, so wrinkly and unable to be sold, but still legible / readable; I can't believe what people do to their books, though it was suggested it may have been dropped in the bath) and they GAVE it to me!! So in one day I got both his books. *happy, happy* I didn't realise how popular he is - I am so ignorant at times.
I have been watching your additions with interest - I saw another Coetzee I don't have - I have you marked to show on my home page, which is very helpful for connections, but dangerous for slowing down on book acquisitions.
I just wanted to say thank you again because it was a very nice thing you did. I keep looking at those books and considering where to put them in my TBR list.
Have you seen the Booker short-list for this year? What do you think?

Oh, yes please - can I have both those to mooch?!! The Jonathan Safran Foer one looks very interesting and I haven't got any Camus - shameful! That is very nice of you, thank you! And two will help with postage costs, at least I hope it will.
Well done you! I will watch your additions with glee! Such a bargain! I love a book bargain, it can't get any better than getting a great book AND paying a good price!
LOL!!! I hope you get your book for Father's Day - but how coincidental is that? I thought the name was familiar - I am slowly collecting Miles Franklin books and supporting our authors. There is something special about reading about a place you know intimately in a book. That is why I really enjoyed the Kerry Greenwood Phryne Fisher series - it was like reading a subtle history of our society in the '20s - she researches so well.
Happy adding, and Happy Father's day - I will check your BM inventory so I can mooch the books - yes?
Thank you again - that was a lovely gesture. *sigh* Another author for me to love...

Even though I am green with envy at all those Booker's you have acquired (ALL of them, or just the winners are we talking here)I am sending you good luck for the fair this weekend! (Hmmm...my green has turned a shade darker contemplating all the 'fun at the fair' you will have!)
Isn't the hunt the best?!! I have been dubbed by a friend a 'mad series-hunter'. I seem to have usurped my fantasy with crime series lately; still able to hunt for series in that genre you see. I have always read some Booker-listed books; I happily read all types, but this site has broadened my horizons immensely and I have found (and read) some truly great books. I was just informed about another author (Australian): Steven Carroll - have you heard of him? I feel very ignorant at times, but becoming much more informed... :) Hopefully!
Happy hunting, I hope you find heaps!
