Hi Peter,
On the subject of birds, you might be interested in this book on the godwit that has just been published here in New Zealand. Once again the remarkable Bookman Beattie draws it to my attention on his blog - http://beattiesbookblog.blogspot.com/200...

Hi Peter,

Since you seemed to like my novel The Night Battles, I thought you might enjoy its website, which just launched:

http://www.thenightbattles.com

I'd love to hear what you think!

Cheers,

MF Bloxam
We're hoping you and yours are well.

Hi;
Mark and I have been discussing the possibility of another group read in November and want your input. We have narrowed it down to two books at this point. "The People of the Book" by Geraldine Brooks and "The Thirteenth Tale" by Diane Setterfield. So chat it up with friends or us and let us know if you are up for it and what you think. Probably the same plan as with "Pillars of the Earth" which seemed to work out perfectly for almost all of us.
Think it over and give one of us a shout.
hugs and looking forward to hearing from you,
belva
Hi Peter - another post on Beattie's blog that might interest you. Scroll down to see the 2 war memoirs being republished next year. http://beattiesbookblog.blogspot.com/200...

I am really happy to see you like Montalbano. Since I am Italian, I might be biased, but I have always thought it is one of the best series ever created. Enjoy!

Paola :-))
Glad to see you're enjoying the Inspector Montalbano books so much, petermc! There's nothing better than coming upon a great series that's well-developed, so you can immerse yourself in it. I felt that way with the Richard Sharpe and Lee Child series when I first came upon them. I went from one book to another, totally caught up in them.

Montalbano is one of the great characters out there, and his surrounding cast isn't too shabby either. Guaranteed to bring a smile. I'll look forward to hearing your reactions to the others in the series!

Best - Joe
Hey I thought of you when I was reading ThePam's thread -- she does a lot of kid's reviews and mentioned one illustrated book of poetry she's reading aloud with her kids.

Hi Peter,

I encourage you to check and perhaps try to contact Jeffrey Alfier - a poet and poetry addict with an extensive interest in war-related poetry. Early this year he founded a poetry journal called the San Pedro River Review. His username is southwestpoet - link here: http://www.librarything.com/profile/sout....

If it is any solace to you, I can only say what you already know, it takes time. I am the eldest child. I have memories of my sister and I torturing the heck out of our younger sibling/sister.

There was a stuffed animal (monkey) that we knew she did not like. We would wait until my mother left the room, baby in the bassinet, while we stealthily crept up to her, monkey in hand, waving the toy saying "here, baby, baby, baby!" She would scream and we would smile while hearing our mother say "What in the world are you doing to your baby sister!" "Nothing, really nothing" was our reply.

The positive side of the story is that she and I grew to be very close.
I love your profile picture! :)
Thanks for the recommendation on the WW1 book. I had a look in Unity (one of my favourite bookshops here) yesterday and they didn't have it, but will look in the library. I did have a good look at Postwar though and got out of there without buying it. It'll take me forever at 800 pages!
Hi Peter,

Instead of clogging your 75 book challenge with questions about your library, I thought I'd clog your profile page!

Haev you read the Taylor book on Berlin yet? We share it. I started it as soon as I bought it, but got sidetracked when he was going over the 1800s.

And what did you think of Postwar by Tony Judt? I've b een eyeing it but am not buying any new books for some time (10 have to go from the pile before I let myself buy 1 new one... we'll see how I dogwith that!)

Cheers
Cushla
peter, thanks for those suggestions. will definitely look them up!
hi peter,

being the local expert at 75-challenge on war non-fiction :-), would you recommend any good reading on the Sepoy rebellion, and on the Opium Wars? while there's plenty of reading ideas in LT on the fiction side touching war, conflict and similar issues, not many look further and explore the history. recommendations highly appreciated.
