About me I'll never forget how I met Pickford, and neither, for that matter, will the passengers I had in my car at the time. (The Goalmaker)
About my library "Don't let criticism hurt you, some people rejoice to see a referee writhe under it. It tickles them, and really if you are a good referee it cannot harm you." Wm Pickford
"This poetry that steps outside the book." Sean O'Brien 'Cantona'
"-Because a few men in a field wearing red
Look like many men - if there are ten you will think
There are a hundred (....)- But, best reason of all
A man in a red shirt can neither hide nor retreat."
Hugh MacDiarmid 'Why I Choose Red'
Only 8 of these books (actually I was surprised it was that many)were in the OSM top 50 sports books, for some of the following reasons :
a) too many people like books on boxing;
b) I have given away copies of Fever Pitch but never retained one, perhaps because of the 1979 final;
c) I do not think climbing is a sport;
d) "How Steeple Sinderby Wanderers won the FA Cup" is a marvellous book, but I haven't included fiction (apart from the ghosted memoirs of sportsmen of course);
e) the same goes for "Underworld", except it's nowhere near as good a book;
f) not enough of those making the selection felt that any book being about MUFC makes it essential reading.
Ho hum.
