About me'In everything, I want to reach
To the very essence.
In work, in searching for the path,
In troubles of the heart.

To the essence of days gone by,

Like a character out of George Gissing, I sit by my fireplace in South London surrounded by rather too many books. A suspicious number of them are in foreign (and in the worst cases, dead foreign) languages.

About my libraryI'm presently engaged in disposing of books, so a certain amount of disorder will be observed.

Hello Howard,

I notice you have a copy of Russian Syntax, which I also have.

Are you still studying Russian? If so, you might find Practical Russian Reader helpful. It is a new book of Russian short stories with helpful exercises.

Let me know what you think of it?

I love your reviews -- they're so smart &, unlike so many others, avoid being book reports. (It also helps that I agree with many of them) Thanks for posting them!

Thank you for making great choices for me for SantaThing! I'm looking forward to reading both books. Happy holidays!

Hi there,
I notice that you gave Promised Lands by Jane Rogers just 1 1/2 stars. I've just bought this (yet to read it) and wondered what it was about it you thought so bad?
