Virginia Woolf is definitely not for everyone. She is often credited with creating the stream of consciousness kind of writing where she writes like a person thinks so the brain is constantly jumping around. This is why it may seem like nothing is happening because you are reading pages of the characters thoughts and very little movement of the plot. I'd say you should start with Mrs. Dalloway--it is short and there is more action than books like To the Lighthouse. Right after reading Mrs. Dalloway, I recommend reading The Hours by Michael Cunningham. He molded it after Mrs. Dalloway. I've read them back to back twice and love them both. Once again, maybe Virginia Woolf isn't your cup of tea. I tend to give authors a 3 strikes and you're out rule. For instance I've read 3 books by Philip Roth and 3 of John Irving. I'm just not a fan of either of their writing, even though they have devout followers.
Oh, and on another note...I recently read Orlando by Virginia Woolf. It took me 6 weeks because I kept having to go back and reread portions. Since I'm chasing after a 1 year old, it just seems that I'm going to have to put Woolf aside until I have time to really sit and focus because her books do require undivided attention. Hope this helps!
Thanks anyway.
Noticed you liked The God of Small Things, and I was wondering if you'd be interested in reviewing my new novel and posting your comments here as well as a few other book-related sites. Thought you might like my book since it's also about a grief-stricken family. I could e-mail you the novel in an e-book format if you'd like (I'm out of physical copies at the moment). Here's a link to a summary (and a sample chapter)in case you'd like to read more about the novel before you commit:

Hi there! Haven't heard from you in a while. How's life? Any good books lately? I am looking at your most recent history and I think I am due for a really good classic again. Although...Who You Are When No One Is Looking sounds intriguing. Why did you give it 5 stars?

Write back soon! :)
Thanks for adding me to your interesting library list. For the size of our collective libraries, we sure do have a lot of books in common. In fact, as I perused yours I saw several that I have already read and should add to mine as well as some that look interesting and have been added to my TBR list. Happy reading!
