I really enjoyed it. I think I found it looking for books like "Independent People." Along those lines, check out "Growth of the Soil" by Knut Hamsun. Absolutely killer. A lot like "The Good Earth." Don't know if you've read that, or like "Independent People" without the constant drought, famine, and pestilence!
