I'm not progressive or liberal, but I saw your thread on books for children that represent these ideals. You might check out Knee-Knock Rise by Natalie Babbit. It's a fantasy where the unknown is feared and made into a big monster. (It's also a Newbery Honor book) I think you would like this book and the author.
