About meAfter a disconcertingly long string of jobs, from woodcutter to truck driver to translator and even a model for drawing classes, (no rudy bits!) I ignored everybody's advice to get a stable, proper job and became a writer.
I've been dabbling away at writing for years, but life seemed to always get in the way, not to mention rejection slips and vicious criticism. But I haven't been daunted and I've used the negative experiences to learn the craft. Now, with the economic crisis, there being no jobs, the pressure has been on to get serious with the business side of writing. I don't believe in good luck, just hard work.
A recent study by CareerCast.com, of stressful jobs, put writers on a list of best to worst, at 156 out of 200. As I said, I've had some terrible jobs, but I'd settle for writer any day.
I've always enjoyed daydreaming with the What if? game. I think of a character and put them in an interesting situation and see what happens. I've also always loved reading. I read so quickly as a kid that I got bored when the rest of the class was still trying to catch up. One particular teacher recognised this and gave me advanced books to read. She went out of her way one day to take me to meet Colin Thiele, a famous Australian author. I would love to be able to thank her for giving me that encouragement.
More recently, my writing has been influenced by my move to Spain. My novel, Loosely Translated, is moulded by having lived in Spain for eight years and my work as a translator.

About my libraryI always think you can tell a lot about a person by looking at their library. If you took a look at all my books at home, one could be forgiven for thinking I'm schizophrenic. I just like to explore different things. A wee bit of everything.
